Learn More About Canada Tours

From its Canadian Rockies and coastal beauty in the west, to its cosmopolitan cities and quaint maritime locales in the east, Canada is filled with lovely sights. While some Canada tours cover the breadth of the country from coast to coast, most focus on one section.

Eastern Canada tours range from short jaunts to Canada's capitals to longer itineraries that include scenic cruises or ferry crossings to islands and coastal peninsulas. Overnights on an eastern Canada tour might include Quebec City; the capital of Quebec province is the first French settlement in North America and its fortified walls of the Old Town are still standing. Montreal is also a popular spot for Canada vacations, as it is the second-largest French-speaking population in the Western world, behind Paris. Montreal also has an historic Old Town with cobblestone streets, and the city actually lies on an island at the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers.

Toronto in the east delights visitors with such attractions as the SkyDome and the CN Tower (the world's largest free-standing structure). An excursion to Niagara Falls, one of the greatest natural wonders in the world, is a must if you visit Toronto. Tiny Prince Edward Island, with its lush, pastoral landscapes is the setting for the classic novel "Anne of Green Gables." Scenery here includes quaint fishing villages, red-rock cliffs and rolling hills. Nova Scotia is a mix of cultures, including French, Gaelic, Arab, Eastern European and an aboriginal First Nations group of people called the Mikmaq, who were actually the first settlers on this island.

To the west, many Canada tours focus on the Canadian Rockies in eastern British Columbia and western Alberta, which are filled with inspiring scenery - from brilliant emerald lakes to soaring snowcapped mountain peaks to pristine evergreen forest. National Parks preserve the beautiful land and its unique geology and ecology. Both Banff and Jasper National Parks are known for their many glaciers and icefields; in fact, visitors to the area in the summer months can hop on board a "snowcoach" to ride on top of the 1,000-foot-thick Athabasca Glacier (part of the Columbia Icefield) for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Snowmelt feeds the pretty lakes found in the area, including Lake Louise, whose eastern shore is dominated by the grand Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise built in the late 19th century, and Maligne Lake, where visitors can take a scenic boat tour to Spirit Island for one of the most quintessential views of the Rockies. When you're in the wilderness, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, such as mountain goats, caribou, moose, and even bears.
