Day 1, Thu. ROME ARRIVAL. Arrive in Rome, where you will be met by your Tour Director and transferred to your hotel for a 3-night stay.
Day 2, Fri. ROME. Rome never ceases to amaze and delight. The "center of the ancient world" is a city steeped in history and culture but also a modern metropolis with lively cafes and chic designer shops. Our included half-day sightseeing tour with a Local Guide starts in St. Peter's Square and is followed by a visit to the Roman Forum and the mighty Colosseum, home of the gladiatorial games. This introductory tour is sure to whet your appetite for more sightseeing over the coming days. (B)
Day 3, Sat. ROME. A full day to explore Rome and to enjoy its many attractions. Your Tour Director can offer advice and make suggestions for places to visit, eat, and shop. For most, a visit to the Vatican Museum is a must. Otherwise, maybe throw a few coins in Trevi Fountain and make a wish, climb the Spanish Steps, enjoy cappuccino at Piazza Navona, visit the Pantheon or the Bocca della Verita, or perhaps stroll along the fashionable Via Veneto, memorably featured in Fellini's classic film, La Dolce Vita. Other excursions can introduce you to the splendors of the Roman Hills-the Castelli Romani, 17 towns making up this interesting area just 15 miles southeast of the city. Well known among Romans are two volcanic lakes, and the towns of Frascati, Nemi, and Rocca Pia are especially interesting. Alternatively, visit the town of Tivoli with its famous Villa D'Este fountains and gardens and the Villa Adriana. These are just a few of the many options available. (B)
Day 4, Sun. ROME-SORRENTO. This morning, more time to absorb the unique Roman atmosphere. This afternoon, leave Rome and head south, passing Cassino and Naples on the way to Sorrento, perched high above the Bay of Naples and famed for its breathtaking views and enchanting atmosphere. With its shops, boutiques, cafes and bars, and close proximity to the ancient city of Pompeii, majestic Mount Vesuvius, the beautiful island of Capri, and the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento has all the ingredients for a perfect stay. (B,D)
Day 5, Mon. SORRENTO. Plenty of time to get acquainted with Sorrento today, starting with a guided orientation walking tour. This afternoon, enjoy more time to relax and explore the area. (B)
Day 6, Tue. SORRENTO. A day at leisure. Your Local Host will explain the numerous options and attractions available. (B,D)
Day 7, Wed. SORRENTO. Today you won't want to miss the included excursion to the Amalfi Coast. Follow the stunning coastline for spectacular, ever-changing views. From high up on the winding road, look down over the blue waters, deep gorges, fishing villages and little towns such as Cetara, Maiori, Minori, and Positano, whitewashed houses, and terraces with breathtaking views. The mild climate makes these popular holiday resorts and now it's your turn to discover the dolce vita and charming architecture that make them unmistakably Mediterranean. (B)
Days 8 to 10, Thu. to Sat. SORRENTO. Three days at leisure. Consider a memorable boat trip across the glittering waters of the Bay of Naples to gorgeous Capri. This legendary island is surrounded by rose-tinted rocks and exquisite coves washed by translucent green seas, giving it the look of a precious ocean jewel. Chic Capri town boasts a quaint piazzetta, a maze of twisting streets, and countless glamorous boutiques and fine restaurants. Don't miss an optional guided tour of the island featuring dramatic, steep roads, amazing views toward Vesuvius, and rocky sea shores. Visit the villa of Axel Munthe or take the chairlift to the top of Monte Solaro, the highest point of the island. Otherwise, maybe take a boat ride out to the spectacular Blue Grotto. (B,D)
Day 11, Sun. POMPEII EXCURSION. Today, leave Sorrento for a short drive to Pompeii. In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius unleashed its fury on the 20,000 inhabitants of this thriving Roman city. Although it was a tragic event, the ash that buried the town actually captured a moment in time. Artwork and buildings were preserved and can be seen today during your visit to the ruins of Pompeii. (B)
Days 12 and 13, Mon. and Tue. SORRENTO. More free time to relax, to immerse yourself in the Italian lifestyle, or to venture out on another excursion. If you enjoyed Pompeii, then why not try a trip to nearby Herculaneum, which suffered a similar fate, or maybe a trip to the city of Naples might appeal to you. (B,D)
Days 14 to 20, Wed. to Tue. SORRENTO. Continue your stay for an additional seven nights, with breakfast included each day. (B)
Day 21, Wed. SORRENTO–ROME. Transfer to Rome.
Day 22, Thu. DEPART ROME. The tour ends today with a transfer to the airport for your flight home. |
