Day 1, Thu. ARRIVE IN PALERMO. Arrive in Palermo, where you will be met by your Tour Director and transferred to your hotel for a 3-night stay.
Day 2, Fri. PALERMO. A full day to explore Sicily's busy and colorful capital, set in a valley called Conca d'oro, the 'Golden Shell.' Don't miss the included guided sightseeing tour for a more in-depth look at the city, which has a wealth of lovely squares and market places, churches, and palaces. Also included is a visit to nearby Monreale, a small town overlooking the Oreto River valley, with a visit to its cathedral and cloisters, sometimes referred to as 'the most beautiful temple of the world' with its 6,340 square meters of golden mosaics in the dome. Launched in 1174 by William II, this is the very pinnacle of Arab-Norman art and architecture representing scenes from the Old and New Testaments. From the imposing Christ Pantocrator that dominates the apse area to the scenes from the life of Christ adorning the walls of the aisles and the transept, mosaics cover every square inch of the cathedral. (B, D)
Day 3, Sat. PALERMO. Today you have more time to explore the Sicilian capital or to take advantage of the wonderful selection of optional excursions. (B)
Day 4, Sun. PALERMO-AGRIGENTO. Depart Palermo and head south to Agrigento for a 2-night stay. Located on a plateau overlooking Sicily's southern coast, Agrigento has a charm of its own. Its history dates back to 580 BC. High in the historical center of the city, the Romanesque gothic cathedral built during the 14th century still displays some of its medieval character, as does the 13th-century church of San Nicola. (B,D)
Day 5, Mon. AGRIGENTO. Prepare yourself for an included visit with a Local Guide to the spectacular Agrigento temple valley. This magnificent cluster of Greek ruins overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the Valley of Temples are the ruins of numerous temples but also necropoli, houses, streets, and everything else you would expect to find in an ancient city. There is a small amphitheatre as well as several auditoria and a fine archeological museum. The Temple of Concord, built around 440 BC, is a sight to behold, particularly at night when it is illuminated. (B)
Day 6, Tue. AGRIGENTO-GIARDINI NAXOS. From Agrigento, travel through the heart of Sicily to Giardini Naxos for a 9-night stay. Between Messina and Catania, the town of Giardini Naxos is a fascinating mixture of the ancient past, with its characteristic fishing village, and the new, with modern hotels-the perfect tourist destination! Travelers arrive year round-in the winter to enjoy the snow-covered slopes of Mount Etna and in the summer for the beautiful beaches and full range of water sports. For golfers, there is the 16-hole Il Picciolo course. The craft industries of Giardini Naxos are alive and well with the production of carpets, terracotta, ceramics, and the famous ironmongery. Popular traditions are enthusiastically continued in everyday life. The famous Sicilian cart is symbolic of the town. Among the local customs are fishing for costardelle, grape pressing, a Matrissa musical performances by the Naxos Folk Group, and the famous l'opera dei puppi Sicilian puppet shows. Also, don't miss the Archeological Museum of Giardini Naxos, which houses a wealth of remains from the old town. (B,D)
Day 7, Wed. GIARDINI NAXOS. This morning, get to know the resort of Giardini Naxos on a guided walking orientation. (B,D)
Days 8 to 14, Thu. to Wed. GIARDINI NAXOS. An entire week to relax in this idyllic destination, with plenty of time to explore other fascinating attractions. Your Tour Director will explain the program of optional excursions. You might want to visit nearby Taormina and Castelmola, situated in an elevated position of amazing, unique beauty. Otherwise, take a trip to Mount Etna-known as Muncibeddo in Sicilian and Mongibello in Italian-which is the highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps and one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Other places of interest include Messina, Catania, the second-largest city on the island, and the ancient city of Siracusa, Athens' only rival. (B, 3xD)
Day 15, Thu. DEPART GIARDINI NAXOS. Say arrivederci to Giardini Naxos today before your transfer to Catania-Fontanarossa Airport for your flight home. (B) |
