This is the perfect vacation for travelers who wish to visit a specific region in-depth and learn more about the culture, food, and traditions of this part of Italy. Day 1: (Fri.) Board your overnight transatlantic flight.
Day 2: Arrival in Milan. (Sat.) Time to rest or start exploring Milan, vibrant hub of Italy’s economic miracle. At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and traveling companions for a welcome dinner at the hotel. (D)
Day 3: Milan–Parma. (Sun.) In the morning, enjoy a walking tour with a Local Guide and admire the magnificent gothic Duomo, the glass-domed GALLERIA, and the famous La Scala Opera House. Next, continue to Parma, world famous for its ham and parmesan cheese. After your orientation drive, an optional excursion to an original ham factory is available. (B)
Day 4: Parma–Modena–Maranello–Lucca. (Mon.) Stop in Modena for a walk into its lively center and take pictures at the Ghirlandina Cathedral, where Pavarotti’s funeral was held. Next, a unique feature: enjoy a BALSAMIC VINEGAR TASTING and learn all about this typical Italian product. In the afternoon, an exciting visit to the FERRARI GALLERY in Maranello, birthplace of the Ferrari car, before arriving in Lucca, where you will stay for the next two nights. (B,D)
Day 5: At Leisure in Lucca. (Tue.) After a walking tour through the center of Lucca, the balance of the day is at leisure or you may wish to join an optional excursion to Florence. (B)
Day 6: Lucca–Carrara–Santa Margherita Ligure. (Wed.) A scenic day! Enter the mountains where the marble that Michelangelo used for his famous statues originated from and visit one of the world-famous CARRARA MARBLE QUARRIES. Next, continue to the Mediterranean coast and enjoy your excursion (including a BOAT RIDE, weather permitting) to CINQUE TERRE, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name dates back to the 15th century and is derived from five medieval little villages standing on stony spurs along five miles of the rocky coastline: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. In the late afternoon, arrive at the seaside resort of Santa Margherita Ligure. Ask your Tour Director how to spend your evening. Perhaps a visit to nearby Portofino, a small fishing village with brightly-colored houses that became home to the “rich and famous”? (B,D)
Day 7: Santa Margherita Ligure–Genoa–Asti–Turin. (Thu.) First stop this morning is in Genoa, Italy’s greatest seaport and the city where Christopher Columbus was born. Your orientation drive includes Columbus’ birthplace and the FLOWER MONUMENT, showing Columbus’ three-vessel fleet. Next, enter the Langhe area and arrive in Asti, known for its spumante and Barbera wine. Here, enjoy a WINE TASTING. Time afterwards in town, then visit a local NOUGAT CONFECTIONER (tours 0718-0822 visit the TAPESTRY MUSEUM instead) and savor a piece of hand-made torrone, before continuing to Turin, capital of Piedmont and birthplace of the Fiat car. This evening you may wish to join an optional dinner at one of Turin’s restaurants. (B)
Day 8: Turin. (Fri.) During your sightseeing with a Local Guide, admire the 548-feet-high Mole Antonelliana, symbol of Turin, and the Lingotto Fiera, the former Fiat factory that was transformed into an impressive multi-function center by architect Renzo Piano. Next, walk through the historic center and visit the HOLY SHROUD MUSEUM and CATHEDRAL. Afternoon and evening at leisure. (B,D)
Day 9: Turin–Vercelli–Milan. (Sat.) Before leaving Turin today, don’t miss the opportunity to join the optional excursion to the second-largest Egyptian Museum in the world. Later, visit a RICE FACTORY in Vercelli and learn everything about its traditional products, before returning to Milan. An optional farewell dinner in one of Milan’s fine restaurants may be the perfect way to celebrate the success of your Italian vacation. (B)
