Itinerary

There is no more enriching, exciting family vacation than a real African safari. Explore the natural world at its very best, with morning and afternoon game drives. Our experienced tracking guides will help you spot Tanzania's fabled Big Five – the lion, the leopard, the buffalo, the rhino and the elephant – as you roam through the Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Serengeti national parks as well as spectacular Ngorongoro Crater on Tauck Bridges' Africa family tour. Board a hot air balloon and soar over the savanna at dawn, when the animals are beginning to stir – a highlight of this Africa family tour. Visit tribal villages to learn about their way of life in the bush, learn about different cultures, and stay in Tauck's private tented camp in Serengeti National Park. Tauck's Africa family tour is truly the journey of a lifetime and one that your family will always remember.

Day 1 – Arrive Arusha, Tanzania

Tour departs: Kilimanjaro International Airport. A transfer from the airport to Arumeru River Lodge is included upon your arrival. The perfect introduction to the spectacular beauty of Tanzania, your African lodge is located on the grounds of an old coffee farm and is not far from Arusha and Kilimanjaro national parks.

Day 2 – Kilimanjaro or Arusha National Park
Mount Kilimanjaro is not only one of the world's highest mountains, it is also one of its highest volcanos! Generations of modern-day explorers have dreamed of climbing its storied slopes – and while we won't be climbing all the way to the top, you can join us for an exciting walk up Kilimanjaro's Merengu trail. Or, if you just can't wait another minute to experience a game drive, then climb aboard our open-top safari vehicle as we look for giraffes, baboons, flamingoes, buffalo and more in Arusha National Park. Everyone meets back at the lodge tonight for a welcome dinner. Meals BLD

Day 3 – Discover the place where life began
Head for your tented camp in Tarangire National Park today, a place where you will see both the Masai people and the second largest concentration of big game in the world. According to Masai legend, Tarangire is the place where life began. It's also the place where Hollywood filmed lots of African movies! Embark on a game drive in the African savannah to see elephants cooling off in a watering hole and big cats lounging in the shade under baobab trees. You'll meet members of the local Masai tribe this evening, who will share some of their local tribal customs with you. Meals BLD

Day 4 – Handicrafts & elephant dung papermaking
Learn what it takes to make colorful beadwork with a member of a local Maasai tribe and try your hand at elephant dung papermaking. Afternoon and nighttime game drives add to the day's excitement, showcasing the animals that live in the African bush. Meals BLD

Day 5 – A Masai boma to a Ngorongoro farm
Go inside a Masai boma and enjoy time in a local school before going on a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. A paradise for bird lovers, this area teems with pink flamingoes and great birds of prey. Spend the next two nights on a 500-acre coffee farm. Meals BLD

Day 6 – Life on an African coffee plantation
Discover the secrets of coffee farming in Africa, an important part of the economy in this region, and learn how coffee is grown, picked and processed. The rest of the day is free. Meals BLD

Day 7 – Ngorongoro, Africa’s “Garden of Eden”
Hop aboard an open-top safari vehicle for a game drive and picnic in two-million-year-old Ngorongoro Crater, home to almost every animal species in Africa and a great place to spot Africa’s “Big Five” – buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard and the rare black rhinoceros. Visit Olduvai Gorge and make tracks for Tauck’s exclusive tented camp. Meals BLD

Day 8 – Hot air balloon ride at dawn
Rise early for a hot air balloon ride* at dawn over the Serengeti. This is a great way to enjoy panoramic views of the grasslands, watching the circle of life take place before your eyes, undetected by the wildlife below. Spy zebras, hyenas, leopards, elephants, and jackals on an afternoon game drive with a local guide who knows the best places to find the animals that make their homes here. Meals BLD

Day 9 – Game drives in the western Serengeti
Morning and afternoon game drives showcase Africa untamed, offering you and your family a front-row seat for viewing and a good chance to see wildebeest, prides of lions, fleet-footed cheetahs and herds of giraffes and zebras. Meals BLD

Day 10 – Wildlife viewing & a sundowner
Spend your last day on safari enjoying the breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife of the Serengeti plains. A traditional “sundowner” and dinner amidst a magical African sunset create the memories of a lifetime and prove a fitting finale to this extraordinary safari. Meals BLD

Day 11 – Journey home
Tour ends: Kilimanjaro International Airport. Fly to Arusha, where a day room has been reserved for you at Arumeru River Lodge. A transfer is included from Arumeru River Lodge to Kilimanjaro International Airport this evening. Meals BLD
