Join residents in local markets, along city streets, and on all modes of transport as we take you off the beaten path to discover the life and heritage of Kyoto rarely seen by tourists. It’s a perfect, different and lively view of Japan, with a great hotel and our best English-speaking guides.

Day 1 - Excursion to Inari and Uji

Your personal guide awaits you this morning in the lobby of the 4-star Rihga Royal Hotel. Together, you’ll travel by train to Inari to see the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine, set on a wooded hillside with 1,000 vermilion-hued Torii gates! Continue to Uji by train and visit Byodoin Temple. In Momoyama, you’ll tour the Gekkeikan Okura Memorial Sake Museum. Learn the rich history of sake brewing and enjoy a tasting of this traditional beverage.

Day 2 - Excursion to Arashiyama

A morning train ride and a pleasant walk with your private guide bring you to the banks of the Arashiyama River for a boat ride through the scenic Hozu Rapids. Arriving in the small fishing town of Arashiyama, you’ll visit Togetsukyo Bridge and Tenryu-ji, the head temple of the Rinzai School of Zen Buddhism. Return to Kyoto by train and enjoy the rest of your day at leisure. Meals B

Day 3 - Kyoto In Depth

A full-day walking tour with your private guide reveals Kyoto’s many facets. You will also join residents on the city’s efficient public transportation system to explore in different parts of the city. In the Karasuma-Imadegawa district, we’ve arranged for an exclusive visit inside the garden grounds of the Imperial Palace. Normally closed to the public, General Tours special appointment here is subject to confirmation from the Imperial Household Agency. Your in-depth sightseeing also includes Ginkakuji Temple, Sanjusangendo Temple, and the lively Nishiki Market. Meals B
