It was the most important cultural centre of Egypt in ancient times but declined after Cairo became the capital of Egypt in 969 AD. Today Alexandria is Egypt’s leading port and a most important industrial centre but still has a reputation as a cultural centre, and has a beautiful seafront area known as the Corniche.
