Beautiful Bermuda

This British overseas territory that is 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina is a popular stop for cruise ships departing from East Coast ports. Some short cruise itineraries from Boston, Baltimore, New York City or New Jersey ports sail solely to Bermuda, offering vacationers three days to explore this charming island.

Cruise ships dock at the Royal Naval Dockyard, formerly a strategic outpost for the British Royal Navy. Today, it’s a scenic tourist destination, filled with shops, restaurants and art galleries. You can watch talented artisans at the Bermuda Arts Center and Dockyard Glassworks, sample the sweets at the Bermuda Rum Cake Company, even snorkel and kayak at Snorkel Park Beach.

Bermuda abounds with pretty pink-sand beaches. Perhaps the most popular is wide Horseshoe Bay Beach with its crescent shape, offering plenty of space for lounging and playing in the turquoise ocean. Facilities include a snack bar, restrooms, and umbrella and chair rentals; it makes a great place to enjoy the day on shore.

For scenic hiking or biking in Bermuda, consider the Railway Trail. Twenty-two miles of train tracks formerly stretched from one end of Bermuda to the other. Today, it’s a path for hikers, joggers and bicyclists. Parts are paved, some are not; signs along the way point out interesting sights. It’s certainly a safe way to enjoy outdoor exercise on Bermuda. Walking along the sides of roads on which cars drive can be a little scary, as residents who know the roads take curves at a quick clip.

Other things to do in Bermuda: browse the shops in downtown Hamilton, tour the fascinating Crystal Caves, rent a moped to explore on your own, play a round on one of the island’s scenic golf courses, or try one of Bermuda’s famous cocktails: the Rum Swizzle or Dark & Stormy!
