Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the evening of August 25. Due to the slow storm movement from August 26-30, catastrophic flooding occurred in southeast Texas and the greater Houston area causing delays and interruptions in our communications with our travelers. We were forced to close early and even at the time of this writing we are operating with limited staff and resources.
More than 51 inches of rain fell from Harvey, which broke the record for the greatest amount of rain recorded from a single storm in the continental United States. That’s more than 4 feet of rain!

Stats:
- Thousands of water rescues occurred in the Houston metro area as many homes and businesses were swamped by floodwaters.
- Over 12,000 National Guard members have been called into service, and thousands more civilians, from Louisiana and from Texas, have volunteered their boats, time and resources, for search and rescue efforts.
- More than 30,000 people will need temporary shelter. The George R. Brown Convention Center, Toyota Center, NRG stadium and countless other schools, churches and business are functioning as emergency shelters for all evacuees and their pets.
- 38 people have died due to the storm, including a police officer who drowned in a patrol car.
Luckily, Houston emergency shelters have experienced a surging number of volunteers and donations.
