Where Are The LOVE Sculptures Around The World?

Valentine’s Day is upon us and it has us thinking of love around the world. What’s more romantic than traveling the world to see a work of art that celebrates love?

One of the most iconic pieces of art that revolves around love is Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture. It is an iconic pop art image that got its start on a 1964 Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art.

LOVE’s original rendering in sculpture was made in 1970 and is displayed in Indiana at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

This iconic piece of public art took on a life of its own and has been reproduced in a variety of formats for rendering in displays, notably in US cities like Philadelphia’s ‘Love Park’ and on Sixth Avenue in New York city. They soon spread all the way around the world.

These 12 foot LOVE statues, located all around the world, are romantic, without being cheesy. Most of the world’s LOVE sculptures have red painted facades with blue or blue & green sides to match Indiana’s original MOMA card

Here are some of our favorite locations where LOVE sculptures around the world have been spotted.

Italy

Italy’s take on the LOVE sculpture was displayed outside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, Italy. The latin word ‘AMOR’ stands tall in the same format at the original LOVE sculpture.

Germany

In 2005, during the opening of the Langen Foundation’s main building open, the LOVE sculpture was erected on the reflecting pool outside of the building. The museum is located in Neuss, Germany and was created on grounds which used to be a NATO rocket base, which was transformed into a tranquil and serene setting.

Japan

Tokyo, Japan’s Shinjuku district, a LOVE sculpture is set up just outside the Shinjuku I-Land Tower. The version from Tokyo was made with blue and green inside the letters, the colors used in the original design. The Japanese have their own fun with the sculpture. Rumor has it that if you can pass between the V and E without your body touching it, your romantic relationship will succeed.

Canada

Montreal, Canada also had their own LOVE sculpture. It was located in front of the Lhotel by the entrance and has short glass around it to deter viewers from interacting with the art.  The LOVE sculpture was just the beginning of the art collection. The whole hotel is filled with pop artwork, including pieces by Andy Warhol.
