Tour America’s National Parks: A Guide for Traveling in the U.S.

The recent pandemic has not slowed down visitors to U.S. National Parks. You can get an annual pass (as of April 2021) and visit as many parks as you like in the National Park System (NPS).

Taking Pandemic Precautions

The CDC notes being physically active keeps the mind and body healthy. Therefore, visiting the parks and hiking the trails are great ways to get some fresh air and to relieve anxiety. Park rangers are now on duty to uphold the regulations and rules and help visitors, as needed.

When visiting any of the parks, you will need to wear a face mask in federal buildings and other facilities, such as the park’s visitor centers, museums, or inside historic sites. When outdoors, the masks must be worn if physical distancing cannot be maintained.

COVID-19 Symptoms

For everyone’s health and well-being, choose to visit a park at another time if you exhibit any of the following symptoms:

  • COVID-like symptoms, such as a fever, respiratory difficulties, dry cough, or the loss of smell or taste.
  • You have had close contact with a person who has been diagnosed or is suspected as having COVID-19 during the past 14 days.
  • You have been self-quarantining, worried that you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

An Overview of the National Park System

You can visit more than 420 national U.S. parks, but 63 of the national parks stand out as the most popular – hosting millions of visitors each year. Each of the parks has its own special character and attractions. However, Congress has chosen 63 of the parks as being especially important.

Before visiting the parks, you need to know some of the rules. For example, you should not leave any trace of litter when you picnic in a park. Pick up after yourself, clean up food crumbs, and stay on the maintained trails. Following these basic park rules will help keep the park pristine and keep the ecosystem in balance.

Do not approach the wild animals in a park nor feed them. Animals in these settings may be dangerous. Therefore, it’s best to leave them alone in their natural surroundings. Respect their domain.  Keep your distance. (Practice wildlife distancing.) Also, do not take pinecones or rocks from the parks as souvenirs.

Planning for a Park Visit

Before you tour national parks, you should plan ahead. That means you should know when to expect crowds and should reserve your lodgings before your trip. Know where you want to go and what you will be doing when you visit a park. Research trails and get the appropriate permits for exploring the backcountry.

The America the Beautiful Pass

Your entry into each park is the America the Beautiful Pass. While national parks generally charge an entrance fee, buying the America the Beautiful Pass will waive the fee and allow you to visit the parks as many times as you like. Also, you can get some passes on a complimentary basis. To check out the options for the pass, click on this link.

If you plan to visit a specific state, check that state’s national parks before you go on your trip. Most of the popular state parks are found in the western quadrant of the U.S., especially in Arizona (home to the Grand Canyon), Utah (home of Zion National Park), California, Wyoming, and Colorado.

However, the state of Tennessee, located in the eastern U.S., is home to the most popular national park, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Another popular attraction in the state is the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, part of a trail system that extends from the state of Georgia in the south to the northern U.S., or Maine.

Planning a Visit to Tennessee

If you plan to tour the National Park System (NPS), Tennessee is a good place to start. You can also visit other less-known parks and sites in the state, such as the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail, or the Stones River National Battlefield.

Grand Canyon National Park – A One-of-a-Kind Destination

You cannot visit the National Parks in the U.S. without including Grand Canyon National Park, located in Arizona, on your bucket list. The iconic park is just as symbolic as the Statue of Liberty in New York. One of the world’s seven natural wonders, the park is home to paleolithic and rocky gems.

Grand Canyon Stats

In 2019, Grand Canyon Park celebrated its 100th birthday. The canyon in the park spans 277 miles (446 km) in length and 18 miles or 29 km wide. It plunges to a depth of approximately 7,000 feet or 1,857 meters.

The Colorado River runs through the park, home to the oldest rock layers in the world, estimated to be around 2 billion years old. The highest point in the park, the Desert View Watchtower, located on the South Rim, stands 7,522 feet or 2,293 meters above sea level.

Even though the average width of the canyon is about 10 miles (16 km), it takes about 5 hours driving time (215 miles or 345 km) to go from the park’s South Rim to North Rim.

The landscape and terrain of the Grand Canyon is unlike any other site or scenic attraction you will ever see.

You can visit the Grand Canyon anytime. However, temperatures in the summer can reach in the 3 figures when measured in Fahrenheit. Also, the elevations, when hiking the South Rim, can vary – with a rainstorm and colder temperatures often occurring in a lower elevation while it may be bright, hot, and sunny in an upper tier of the park.

Always Check the Weather First if You Plan to Hike

If you do plan a hike in a national park, always check the weather first. Also, always carry plenty of water to stay well-hydrated. You don’t always have access to a plentiful water supply. Give loved ones itineraries of where you plan to hike and when you will be hiking the trails.

California: Home to the Most National Parks in the U.S.

Seeing the Redwood Tree

While each state contains at least one national park, California boasts the largest number of national parks in the U.S., or 28 national parks. One of the well-known parks is Redwood National Park, home to the tall and towering redwood tree.

A redwood tree is a superlative – the tallest, oldest, and most massive tree of all forest trees. The tree is simply awesome to view. California is one of the only places in the world to see the redwood tree – an iconic conifer of the Golden State.

Redwood groves flourish about 12 miles north of San Francisco, but a trip to Redwood National Park defies description. Redwoods actually represent 2 distinct but related species of trees. For example, coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) highlight the tallest living trees on the planet. They can grow as high as 380 feet and span up to 18 feet across. You find the trees bordering the California coast from Oregon down to California’s Big Sur.

Giant Sequoias or redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are found only in the Sierra Nevada Mountain in California, near the eastern edge of the state. The trees, which rise over 300 feet tall spread as much as 30 feet across. The oldest of the trees have survived and have been in existence for over 3,000 years.

Because redwood forests are abundant in California, many of the state’s state parks have “redwood” in their names.

All of the national parks in California represent varying terrains, from the low deserts of the high Sierras to the lush green landscapes in the north.

Visiting San Francisco and Traveling South

You can easily spend one month just exploring national parks and historic sites in California. A good itinerary to follow begins in San Francisco. For example, once you fly into the city, you can explore sites, such as Golden Gate, Muir Woods, Point Reyes, and the Rosie the Riveter World War II Homefront.

If your journey in California takes you south to San Diego, you will want to visit the Joshua Tree National Park and the Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego. A visit to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, near Los Angeles, is also worth your time.

Visiting Channel Island National Park

If your journey leads you to Ventura, California, take time to visit Channel Island National Park (about an hour’s drive from Santa Monica) before journeying north to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National parks.

You should spend about 3 days in the Kings Canyon and Sequoia parks to take in the major sights. Another park to include on your California National Parks list is Pinnacles. Spend a day in the park before returning to San Francisco.

The Best National Parks to View Wildlife

If you like to view wildlife, some national parks provide better chances for viewing animals than others. Most wildlife come out at dawn and dusk, making these opportune times to view animals. Therefore, you can include wildlife viewing in your plans when camping or spending overnights in national parks. Just make sure you logistically keep your distance and bring equipment, such as binoculars, for safe viewing.

Big Bend National Park in Texas

One of the great national parks for viewing wildlife in Big Bend National Park, located in southwest Texas. The park, which features the entire Chisos mountain range and a large portion of the Chihuahuan Desert, is home to a large array of wildlife, including spectacular sites, such as the limestone cliffs of the Santa Elena Canyon and Langford Hot Springs, sitting near the Mexican border.

If you visit the montaine setting of the Chisos Basin, you can see animals, such as Mexican black bears or Bighorn sheep. In the landscapes that are more arid, you will find animals, such as coyotes, jackrabbits, mule deer, and javelinas.

Do you enjoy birding? If so, Big Bend National Park is one of the best places to engage in the activity. Hundreds of birds migrate over the area yearly. According to park officials, the park has more species of butterflies, bats, birds, scorpions, reptiles, ants, and cacti than any other place in the NPS.

Channel Islands National Park – Ventura, California

Channel Islands National Park in California has been called the Galapagos of North America – another great place to see wildlife in the NPS. The unique isles off the coast of southern California are teeming with endemic animals. You can also see marine animals migrating to warmer waters during boat rides in the area.

Some of the animals that make the Channel Islands home include the fox, a large variety of species of birds, humpback whales, dolphins, porpoises, foxes, seals, and sea lions. The Channel Islands fox and spotted skunk can only be found in the coastal park.

Seeing Grizzly Bears in the Wild

One of the best national parks to see wild grizzlies is Denali National Park and Preserve.  Located in Alaska, the park covers 6 million acres in Alaska’s interior wilderness. The main focal point of the park is Mt. McKinley (also called Denali) – the tallest peak in the U.S. The mountain stands at a height of 20,310 feet. Guests who visit the park regularly engage in summer activities, such as hiking, backpacking, biking, and mountaineering.

Besides grizzly bears, the park is also home to other animals not commonly found in other parts of the U.S., including arctic ground squirrels, golden eagles, and wolverines. In the autumn, you can see antlered moose while sandhill cranes, migrating across the park, fly overhead. During peak years, visitors can see large numbers of Canadian lynx and snowshoe hares. Dall sheep and gyrfalcons also inhabit the area.

Dry Tortugas National Park – Florida

Featuring a landscape completely different from the other parks that abound in wildlife, the Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida sits along the Gulf of Mexico, west of Key West Florida. It makes up 7 islands, including protected coral reefs. Fort Jefferson Loggerhead Key in the park features sea turtles and the park’s landmark lighthouse. Near Loggerhead Reef, the remains of an 1875 ship, the Windjammer Wreck, represents a popular dive site. Sooty terns, nest at Bush Key, a popular nesting site for all types of seabirds.

If you camp at the site, you will see hermit crabs, especially on the beaches at night. Hundreds of migrating birds fly over the park annually. One special note – Bush Key is closed to the public. Therefore, you need to bring binoculars if you wish to view the wildlife. The major species in the park include the above-mentioned hermit crabs, sea turtles, birds, and tropical fish.

Everglades National Park – South Florida

While visiting Florida, you may also want to visit Everglades National Park. Few parks in the U.S. have more wildlife than Everglades. Covering 1.5 million acres, the wetlands preserve sits on the south tip of Florida, and often is compared to a slow-moving and grassy river.

The park, which comprises mangroves, pine flatwoods, and sawgrass marshes, provides a home to hundreds of animal species. Endangered animals, such as the leatherback turtle, Florida panther, and West Indian manatee, live inside the park.

The Everglades is the only place in the world where you will see both crocodiles and alligators because of the park’s brackish waters. If you visit the Gulf Coast in the park, you will want to take a boat tour. During the journey, you can spot dolphins, manatees, and pelicans. Shark Valley, in the park, features alligators, herons, and egrets. A visit to Flamingo will give you the opportunity to see manatees, crocodiles, and, yes – flamingos.

The Everglades is also a base for wood storks, ibises, bobcats, freshwater turtles,, and armadillos. If you want to see the same animals in a less crowded location, visit nearby Big Cypress National Preserve. Located in Ochopee, Florida, the preserve sits about 45 miles west of Miami.

Glacier National Park – Montana

You cannot round out a list of popular national parks without including Glacier National Park in Montana. The wildlife sanctuary spans 1,583 square miles of wilderness in the Rocky Mountains, with the park’s glacier-hewn peaks running up to the Canadian border. The Going-to-the-Sun Road crosses the park, which features over 700 miles of hiking trails, with a path leading to the park’s beautiful Hidden Lake. Visitors in the park like to cycle, camp, and backpack.

If you trek trails in the park, you will see marmots, pika, and bears. The park features both black and brown bears as well as several ungulate (hooved) animal species, including elk, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep. Mountain lions also reside in the park, and show up from time to time.

Now Is a Good Time to Plan a Park Adventure

Now is a great opportunity to explore the National Parks in the U.S. By purchasing an America the Beautiful Pass, you can explore the National Park System in one of various locales. Whether you travel to Florida, the northeastern U.S., or escape to a park in the West, you will discover a world that takes you away from the stress, for a while, of everyday living. Set your sights on visiting the parks this coming summer and fall.

Status of Travel to Europe

As of April 30, 2021, the prospects look hopeful for U.S. travelers, wishing to travel to Europe once more, or the countries that comprise the European Union. Currently, travel is not restricted to the countries of UK and Serbia.

Requirements for Unrestricted Travel to Europe for Americans

The Serbian government, in December 2020, said passengers from the U.S. could enter the country by presenting a negative antigen test or negative PCR test for the coronavirus.

If you wish to travel to the U.K., or England, Wales, or Northern Island, you must fill out a passenger locator form and show proof of a negative Covid-19 test that you took in the previous 3 days.

Before you go, you must pay around $290 for a test that has to be taken in a mandatory quarantine of 10 days, on or before the second day or on and after the eighth day. You can pay a hefty fine if you violate these measures (up to $13,860) or face 10 years in prison.

If you plan to travel to Scotland, you must follow the above mandates, but you must spend your 10-day self-isolation period in a quarantine in a hotel, approved by the government, at your own expense. This rule also applies to anyone who has received a vaccination.

The latest report about travel to Europe (April 30, 2021), indicates that travel may pick up for Americans who have received full vaccination for Covid-19. After a shut-down of non-essential travel for over a year, Americans who show proof of immunity may be able to travel again in Europe. What happens next hinges on policy changes for vaccine certificates.

The European Union will accept travelers vaccinated with approved vaccines, so the future appears brighter for Americans who wish to enjoy the culture and history of major European countries, such as Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Italy. However, the current travel bans make it imperative that travelers remain realistic – waiting it out while measures fall into place to prevent future outbreaks.

In the meantime, your travel planning is subject to change. While vaccination remains an obstacle in travel planning, so does the switching of hot spots where the virus prevails globally. Therefore, in the current environment, nothing is set in stone.

EU countries have agreed to coordinate on the restriction of free movement in response to Covid-19. The EU has created a color code to classify regions – green, orange, yellow, and gray, based on the epidemiological situation in the color-coded region.

While green denotes the fewest number of cases involving Covid-19, red areas define danger zones where self-quarantine and testing must be followed.

The Czech Republic: The Hardest Hit Country

The Czech Republic is considered a high-incidence area in Europe. Therefore, travel is prohibited and hotels have closed. Museums, theaters, and recreational facilities remain closed as well. Most restaurants only serve take-out food.

The Traffic Light System

The above color coding in place is based on a traffic light system that the EU has imposed to determine the level of the disease outbreak. Most of the countries are in the dangerous red zone.

At this time (April 30, 2021), several EU nations plan to extend or re-impose lockdown measures, as a third wave of the pandemic sweeps over Europe, triggered by new variants of the coronavirus, one of which is a B17 mutation, first discovered in Britain in the UK.

This new wave is affecting Germany, Denmark, Italy, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. To combat the current virulent UK strain, the EU is blocking travel entry with exception of essential travel and freight shipments.

The Digital Green Certificate

On March 17, 2021, the European Commission proposed the creation of a Digital Green Certificate to promote safe and free movements of citizens inside the EU during the pandemic. Digital Green Certificates are valid in all EU member states.

The Digital Green Certificate offers proof that a person has received a Covid-19 vaccination, they received a negative test result, or they recovered from the virus. Officials plan to issue the certificate through hospitals, health authorities, or similar facilities. The digital version may be stored in a mobile device, or a paper version, with a QR code, containing essential information, may be obtained. A digital seal will be added to authenticate the document.

The Digital Green Certificate is designed so restrictions now in place can be lifted gradually and in an organized manner. When traveling, each EU citizen or third-country national residing or temporarily staying in the EU can be exempted from restrictions imposed on free movement. If one of the EU member states requires a holder of a Digital Green Certificate to test or quarantine, it must notify the European Commission and the other EU member states, justifying the decision.

The Digital Green Certificate’s QR codes contain a digital signature to prevent falsification. The Certificate is mainly designed to prove testing results, which are frequently required when public health restrictions are in place. By implementing the Certificate in the EU, European Commission members can adjust any current restrictions to promote future travel. Vaccination certificates will be issued to vaccinated persons for any Covid-19 vaccine.

To waive free movement restrictions, member states in the EU must accept vaccination certificates for vaccines that have received marketing authorization by the EU. The Digital Green Certificate contains required key details, such as the holder’s name, date of birth, issuance date, and info about a vaccine, testing, or recovery. The Certificates will only feature the necessary data. All health information will remain with the member state that issued the Certificate.

According to the European Commission, it will establish a digital infrastructure that will enable it to authenticate the Digital Green Certificates. In response, member states in the EU will introduce changes in their nation’s health records network

The European Commission is currently working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to make sure the Digital Certificates issued in the EU can be recognized in other places of the world.

The European Commission has also contacted the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) about the Certificates. The ICAO creates the specifications needed to support machine-readable travel documents, including visas and passports.

More about Color-Coding and Mapping for Travelers

Based on information from member states in the EU, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control plans to publish a map of EU member states categorized by regions, showing the risk levels of the pandemic. This traffic light system will show regions in the colors of green, orange, red, dark red, and gray. The map will also provide data from Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland.

Each color is signified as follows:

Green indicates that the notification rate of the disease is less than 25, and the test positivity rating is less than 4%.

Orange areas are regions where the notification rate is less than 50 but the test positivity rating is over 4%. The notification rate may span from 25 to 150 as well, but the test positivity score is under 4%.

Red is shown in places where the notification rate is 50 or over, and the test positivity rate is at least 4%, or the notification rate is over 150.

Dark red reveals an area where the notification rate is 500.

A map with gray areas indicates that sufficient information has not been obtained, or the testing rate is 300 or less.

From the map, travelers can determine pandemic risk in the area where they travel. In turn, travelers should be able to see if they will have to follow certain measures if they travel to certain EU destinations. The mapping will be supported by the information contained on the Re-open EU website.

Referring to color-coding and mapping details, member states should discourage non-essential travel to and from dark red areas and red areas. The mapping will enable member states to decide on the introduction of certain travel restrictions, such as tests or quarantines on travelers coming from other areas. Member states have agreed not to place restrictions, such as testing or quarantine, on travelers coming from low-risk green regions.

Member states that consider it mandatory to introduce free movement restrictions may require persons traveling from an area, other than a green area, to undergo self-quarantine or quarantine or to take a Covid-19 test before or after arrival.

Each member state must decide what measures it wishes to apply to travelers coming from risk areas to specific locales, and whether to require a rapid antigen or RT-PCR test.

Member states may also require travelers who enter their territory to submit a passenger locator form. As previously noted, this form is required by the UK for anyone traveling from the U.S.

Travelers Travelling Because of an Essential Function

Any traveler who is traveling because of an essential function typically will not undergo quarantine if they arrive from an orange, red, or gray area. These individuals include:

  • Persons in critical occupations, including health care employees, or anyone referred to in the guidelines issued for the free movement of workers during the pandemic.
  • Transport workers, including people who drive freight vehicles.
  • Patients traveling for important medical reasons.
  • Students who travel abroad daily.
  • People having to travel for business or family reasons.
  • Diplomats and people whose presence is required on behalf of certain international organizations.
  • Military personnel, police officers or workers who provide humanitarian aid in the exercise of their duties.
  • Journalists who must cover stories.

Because dark red areas increase the risk of the pandemic spreading, member states are advised to require travelers from the areas to take part in a pre-departure test and undergo self-isolation and quarantine.

Will Vaccinations Make Travel, Once Again, Possible?

On February 25, the EU said it planned to introduce a vaccination certificate for trip-goers by summer 2021. Traditional countries, such as Greece, pin high hopes on the vaccination certificates. The Greek government has made a bilateral agreement with Israel that allows Israeli nationals to enter Greece with a green pass – proof that the holder has received the required vaccination.

In addition, Denmark and Sweden announced the creation of electronic vaccination certificates used for traveling abroad. In Estonia, entrants do not have to follow the country’s quarantine requirement if they show proof of vaccination. The same applies in Poland, where an app is being developed to show vaccination proof.

Europe’s 5 Most-Visited Countries

The 5 most visited countries in Europe include Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and the UK. Of these countries, traveling to France, Italy, Spain, and the UK continues to carry heavy restrictions.

1. German Travel Restrictions

In Germany, nationwide measures have been facilitated to keep citizens from traveling for nonessential reasons inside and outside the country. If you enter Germany by plane, you need to take an advanced coronavirus test. Only travelers with a negative test can fly into the country. This rule applies, regardless of the pandemic status in a departure country. The country announced tighter controls at the borders as well. Anyone crossing a border will be checked.

Tourism, as of April 30, 2021, in Germany remains prohibited, Hotels cannot offer overnight stays for tourists and visas are not granted except in special cases. Distance and hygiene rules must be followed, and masks must be medical.

The country has outlined a new classification system that divides geographical areas as high risk, high-incidence, and virus-variant. A Covid-19 test must be completed within 48 hours and a 10-day quarantine must immediately take place, regardless of the test result.

Since January 24, 2021, countries in Europe that have been classified as high-incidence areas include the Netherlands, France, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, and Montenegro.

2. The Pandemic and Travel in France

France represents the top travel destination in the world with regards to arrivals. At this time (April 30, 2021), the country has banned travel with countries outside the EU due to a high infection rate and mutation of Covid-19. Travelers over 11 years old from European countries must show proof of a negative PCR test, taken within 72 hours.

3. Travel in the UK

Anyone traveling to the UK must provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test (LAMP, antigen, or PCR). The test must be taken up to 3 days before travel begins. The regulation applies to England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Anyone entering the country, regardless of where they come from, must fill out a passenger locator form.

Great Britain has begun easing lockdown restrictions with the aim of ending all the measures by June 21, 2021. Since March 31, 2021, Britons have been able to go outside in groups of no more than 6 people.

While the stay-at-home rule has been relaxed, the government still advises citizens to work at home, if possible. Since April 12, 2021, stores, beauty salons, and outdoor catering services in restaurants and pubs began to resume activities.

People in the country wear masks on public transport, in cabs, and in groceries. Travel abroad or within the UK remains restricted unless the reason for travel is imperative.

4. Italy’s Travel Restrictions

Italy extended its state of emergency until April 30, 2021, with entry from abroad heavily prohibited. You can learn more about travel restrictions by accessing the country’s Foreign Ministry website.

While entry into Italy from most European countries is allowed, travelers must still provide a Covid-19 test result taken within 48 hours of entry. They must also undergo a 5-day quarantine, and show another negative test result after 5 days.

Visitors must report to local health authorities upon arrival as well and complete a self-declaration form. Travelers from the UK, other than Italian citizens, have been banned entry indefinitely. Flights to and from Brazil are banned as well. No one, other than an Italian citizen, who has transited through Brazil within the last 14 days. can enter Italy.

Italy has implemented the traffic light system for lockdown. Sardinia sits in the red zone, which has the highest infection risk. Residents must stay home except for work, to run essential errands or to seek medical treatment.

Basilicata, Valle Aosta, Puglia, Calabria, and Sicily fall inside the orange zone – a classification for medium risk infection. Other areas in the country are yellow zones, with low risks of infection. At this time (April 30, 2021), only outdoor dining is permitted. Italians must abide by a 10 pm to 5 am curfew.

5. Travel in Spain

Spain allows unrestricted entry from the EU, the Schengen Area and some third countries. The country, on February 4, 2021, noted restrictions on inbound flights from South Africa and Brazil. This was done to stop the spread of the coronavirus from those countries.

The country, which has been struck hard by the virus, has issued a state of alert and overnight curfew until May 9, 2021. Restrictions regarding travel vary in each of Spain’s autonomous regions. Therefore, different rules apply in the country, depending on the locale’s regulations. Restaurants may only serve or sell outdoors. Health clubs remain closed and concert halls and movie theaters only allow patrons to use a small percentage of their seats. Some separate coronavirus hotspots have been sealed off.

A Major Slump in Travel

Because of the bans on travel in Europe, worldwide tourism slumped drastically in 2020. Travel experts reported almost a 75% decline in global travel. Forecasts for 2021 continue to remain cautious as some bans on travel relax a bit. Emerging trends focus on home-based holidays and vacations that are nature-based or sustainable.

THINGS TO DO IN POLAND

1. KRAKOW

From the Old Town to the Jewish Quarters, Krakow is a city of rich culture, architecture and deep history. Europe’s largest medieval town square is located here and survived the wartime destruction. The entire Old Town has been designated a UNESCO site and is a must-see when visiting Poland.

YOU SHOULD KNOW
According to legend, there once lived a dragon on Wawel hill that required livestock sacrifices so that it would not eat any of the locals. Well, the dragon was slain by the sons of King Krakus and the dragon now has its own statue close to Wawel Castle.

2. AUSCHWITZ

A deep dark stain on history, Auschwitz is, unfortunately, infamous for what Germany did during World War II, committing mass genocide against the Jews. Auschwitz is the location of the most well-known extermination camp. While history cannot be erased, memorials and monuments in memory and reflection have been built to help ease the pain the country still feels.

YOU SHOULD KNOW
In 1945, before abandoning the camps, the Germans destroyed parts of it but much of Auschwitz was intact. It was later transformed into a museum and memorial site. In 1979, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

3. WARSAW

It’s said about 85% of Warsaw was destroyed during the war. However, when you visit today, you can walk around Old Town without even imagining that it had once been just rubble. The only sign of conflict in this city are the museums and monuments scattered around the city. Of course, one of the most famous activities to enjoy when in Warsaw is to take the Royal Route, which is a beautiful way to see Warsaw’s historic landmarks.

YOU SHOULD KNOW
Other than the Old Town, you definitely want to take the Royal Route, a nearly 10-mile route to see all of Warsaw’s most historic landmarks and full of churches, palaces, and amazing homes. The three big highlights here are the Royal Castle, Lazienki palace, and Wilanow Palace.

4. LOCAL FOODS

Although traditionally rich in salts, meats, vegetables, and herbs, Polish cuisine has been going through a bit of a transformation. Due to its Czech and Slovak neighbors, as well as German and Hungarian influences, Polish food has gotten much more eclectic. It’s a must-try activity to find some authentic local polish food when traveling through Poland.

YOU SHOULD KNOW
One of the things about Polish food that makes it so famous is the way they pair things. However, if a heaping portion of meats with sauerkraut soup or goose dumplings do not fire off your taste buds, there are plenty of international options for you to try.

5. MUSEUMS

Some of the most inspiring museums and memorials can be found in Poland. It would be a missed opportunity to visit a few and reflect on the history of this beautiful country. In 2017, there were 127 registered museums throughout Poland, with the capital city Warsaw having the highest number at 16.

BEST TIME TO VISIT POLAND

The Celebrity Summit was also full renovated in 2019! What a beautiful job they did! The cabins have a nice new look and are quite comfortable! Plenty of space so you can fully unpack and enjoy the cruise!

1. VISIT AN UNDERGROUND CHURCH

We’re talking about a church that is literally under the ground! The Bete Giyorgis of Lalibela is a church carved out of a single rock structure around the 11th century. It is one of eleven such churches that are connected by a network of underground tunnels. The church is cut 40 feet beneath the surface with a roof shaped like a cross.

Best time to visit:

The church is a spectacular site year-round, but it is particularly exciting during Easter celebrations in early April.

  • The surrounding town is committed to a traditional lifestyle. There are no cars or paved roads.
  • Religious tradition is an important part of the town and ten percent of the population is in the priesthood.

2. SEE THE BEGINNING OF A WORLD OCEAN

Eswatini is home to the Afar Rift, the site of an opening ocean basin. Plate movement in this part of the world has caused the Afar Rift to open up. While the plates move apart at the rate of about one inch per year and the ocean won’t exist for a very very long time, the site itself is interesting to see and learn about.

Best time to visit:

You can visit this site anytime! It is in the desert, so just be prepared for a little heat when you go, and bring sun protection.

3. ENJOY THE CULTURE OF COFFEE

Head to the Manyate Coffee Village in the Harenna Forest for a tour of wild-grown coffee. The world’s supply of wild coffee is becoming extinct. Most of the coffee worldwide comes from cultivated coffee beans. Learn about wild coffee production and grab a cup at the village.

Best time to visit

Go during harvest season, September-November, and you can experience picking your own coffee beans.

Seasonal Overview Section

  1. Rainy – mid-April-September are the wet months in Ethiopia. The country still has plenty to offer during most of these months, but, if you have a particular interest in seeing the southern part of the country, avoid the months of June-August as the rain causes a lot of inaccessibility due to the muddy, rural roads. This is also the warmest time of year throughout the country. Although April is the official start of the off-season for tourism, it is just the beginning of the rainy season and much of the country is still navigable. As well, it is a great time to visit because the country’s historic churches celebrate Easter with style!
  2. Dry – October-mid-April is the high season for travel in Ethiopia. There are festivals almost every month of the high season, including New Year on September 11th. September-October is also a great time to see the flowers bloom! Since October-April are the dry months of the year, it is the best time to see wildlife and the most easy time of year for traveling around the country. The busiest months for tourism are January and February, so book tours in advance for these months.
