Review: 7 Day Western Caribbean Cruise on Royal Caribbean

Review: 7 Day Western Caribbean Cruise on Royal Caribbean

For the second time this year, I chose to cruise out of the Galveston port on beautiful Liberty of the Seas. As a loyal Royal Caribbean cruiser, most of my cruise vacations are with this line, and although there are more itinerary options out of other ports, Galveston can’t be beat for convenience. It’s easy to get to, there’s ample parking for those who drive themselves, and if you choose to spend extra time in the port area, Galveston is full of history and charm.

Embarkation was smooth and quick, with several different lines based on your room or loyalty club status. Crown and Anchor Society (their loyalty club) members, as well as suite guests, received priority boarding, with all other guests very close behind. Once onboard, public areas were open, including the Windjammer café, the buffet-style dining room, and guests were encouraged to explore the ship while their rooms were being prepared. By 1:00pm, all rooms were ready, and the vacation was officially in full swing.

My sister and I booked an E3 balcony cabin on deck 8; this category is the smaller balcony, but we found it to be quite spacious. It was mid-ship, but not too close to the elevators, so there was almost no hallway noise, but very convenient to everything. We would definitely choose this category again.

Dining on Liberty was fantastic! We were on My Time Dining, which allowed us to dine wherever and whenever we wished, so we took advantage of a specialty dining package, ate in the Windjammer, and in the main dining room, all in our short seven days. The food was far better than our expectations, which were already high. Sabor, the Mexican restaurant, had the perfect combination of spices, flavors, and textures, served by a highly attentive wait staff. Chops Grille, the steakhouse, never disappoints, and was a nice ending to a full day of lounging around in the sun. Windjammer and Rembrandt also had great food, great service, and a very warm, welcoming ambience.

Entertainment onboard was good with lots of options to choose from. Theater shows, ice skating, dancing, etc. were available each day and very well coordinated. Even the kids had activities and special photo sessions with DreamWorks characters.

Caribbean Cruise on Royal Caribbean

Our ports were Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Roatan, Honduras. One word describes all three: HOT!  To be fair, they were also beautiful and abounding in history and culture. We opted to explore the ports on our own, but Royal Caribbean offered excursions to suit all travelers’ tastes. From beach visits to city tours or off-road ATV rides, we could have done just about anything in either port.

Disembarkation was a breeze once we had the right luggage tags. Our car was scheduled to pick us up at 9:15, so we needed to be in one of the first groups to disembark. We initially were given tags for a much later group, but a quick visit to the Diamond Concierge corrected that, and on disembarkation morning, we were off the ship in no time.

All in all, this was one of the best vacations we’ve had in a while, and we’re already booked to go again in February. Two thumbs up for Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas!
