Review: The Rhine, Swiss Alps And Amsterdam With Tauck

The Rhine, Swiss Alps And Amsterdam With Tauck

My family and I had the opportunity to go on The Rhine, Swiss Alps and Amsterdam with Tauck in September. It was a wonderful trip, and definitely up to Tauck’s second to none standards. After flying into Zurich, Switzerland, we were transferred (complementary) by Tauck to the capital city of Bern. The hotel Tauck uses is the Bellevue Palace Bern and is in the old quarter of the city, next door to the parliament building. Bern is one of the most beautiful, classically European cities I have ever been in. The view from the back porch of the hotel was amazing.

We were then transferred to Basel, Switzerland to board our ship with a lunch stop in Lucerne. Old town Lucerne is another wonderful place to walk around with lots of restaurants, the classic old wooden walking bridges, and Lake Lucerne making for a beautiful scene.

We ate at a good restaurant in a city square and did some shopping. There was a Swiss chocolate shop that had an entire wall that was a chocolate waterfall. The Lion of Lucerne may be the saddest statue you will ever see.

On arrival in Basel, we boarded our ship, the MS Grace, which was to be our home for the next seven nights. We would be cruising the Rhine River from Basel to Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The Rhine River is a cruise everyone should do at least once. There were stops along the way in Colmar, Stuttgart, Rudesheim, Koln, and Dordrect. Dordrect, Netherlands was a wonderful little town that was a joy just to walk around in. One of the stops included dinner and cocktails at the Schloss Ehreshoven, a manor house that now houses royal women from around Europe who are destitute and have nowhere else to live. It was such an interesting place, and the string quartet that provided the entertainment during dinner was excellent.

The attention to detail by the crew on the MS Grace and the Tauck tour directors was fabulous. There was no issue too small that they did not attend to. The bar staff was highly entertaining. The meals in the main dining room were amazing. The Compass Rose, the café in the back of the ship, was where we ate most of our lunches.

As always with Tauck, everything on board was complementary, including all meals, drinks, land tours and the gratuities. It is very nice when you do not have to spend any money once you are traveling. The only thing not included with the cost of a Tauck river cruise are the lunches you eat while you are on land and the airfare.

Amsterdam was the last stop. I highly recommend going on the canal cruise, as it is a low effort way to get a good feel for the city and how it is laid out with canals running all through it.

The Rijksmuseum is a great museum and houses Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. When you are looking at the Night Watch, turn to your right and go into the next room.

It housed many items from the military and colonial history of the Netherlands. There are some fascinating items in there.

I highly recommend The Rhine, Swiss Alps and Amsterdam with Tauck. It lived up to Tauck’s standards. I cannot wait to book my next Tauck river cruise, which will be my third. River cruising is a wonderful way to travel. You unpack once and your hotel floats along with you. And as for Tauck, once you travel with them, you many never want to use another tour or river cruise operator.
