Some Tips for Traveling

Traveling can be intimidating if you’re new to it. It can be difficult to know what you will need or how to prepare yourself. We’ve put together some tips that will help you get the most out of your travel experience.

Planning

Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group (which owns, among other things, Virgin Airlines) and frequent world traveler, always has a plan in mind for how he’ll spend his time in transit. You might have a long flight to get to your destination, and possibly a train or bus ride to your final stay. Whatever the case, it’s good to have an idea of what you want to do in that time, otherwise you may grow bored and impatient. Plan ahead, even if your plan is one of how to relax.

Once you arrive at your destination, your plans may take a looser feel. You want to have a plan in mind, so you have a clear idea of what your goals are and what you want to see on your vacation – But you’ll need flexibility as well. You never know when something you planned may be cancelled or unavailable, and likewise you never know when you feel you need to stay at a destination longer than originally planned. For that matter, you never know when you might discover something once you arrive that you decide is worth a visit. Keep a rough guide of what you want to do, but also keep an open mind.

Pack Light

Packing light is part of not over-planning. Possessions can weigh you down, especially if you’re planning a tour through several locations. It’s harder to be flexible when you’re carrying too many things. Plus, everything you carry is one more thing you might lose.

Identify everything you will need. Then identify things you might need, that are practical to bring. Find out if you’ll have an opportunity to do laundry on your trip, and if so, keep that in mind while you minimize.

Don’t forget to save room for any souvenirs or gifts you find along the way.

Don’t be afraid to ask

It’s natural to feel shy in an unfamiliar setting. But remember, many people on your vacation are there to help you, and the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you have questions about what to do somewhere, ask the local tour guides (if you have a travel package that provides them). If you’re at a museum, ask the staff for guidance. If you’re on a train or plane, you may be able to get upgrades or learn about features you didn’t know about before. All of these will combine to give you a better travel experience.

Care for your health

It’s simple, but it’s easy to overlook on a trip where you might be trying to see as much as possible. Sleep well. Drink lots of water. Arrive at stations of departure early, so you aren’t stressed about missing a travel connection. Take care of yourself and your vacation will be that much better.
