Our Active and Discovery on the Danube with Avalon began in Budapest, and we arrived at night. Budapest by night was gorgeous. The Matthias Church Cathedral and Castle on the Buda side and the Hungarian Parliament Building on the Pest side illuminated stunning views that straddled the Danube River. Our Hilton Hotel sat centrally located atop the Buda Castle Hill in the castle district, right next to the Holy Trinity Square. We dined at a table situated directly in front of the glistening black Danube as ships sailed by in both directions. What made it more stunning was the Parliament building lit in opulent amber light as its backdrop. Dinner included a piping hot bowl of delicious traditional Hungarian Goulash.

Review: Central European Experience With Avalon Waterways

Welcome to Prague or as the Europeans say Praha.  I was welcomed for my Central European Experience with Avalon Waterways the minute I arrived by Avalon and whisked away to the Art Deco Imperial Hotel. Perfect historical building in new town and a 20 minute walk to Old Town Praha. We walked around for hours and then we went back to the hotel for dinner reservations which is required. 5 star Michelin restaurant. Dinner was superb.

This past December I had the pleasure of joining Avalon’s Tranquility II for its “Festive Time on the Romantic Rhine with Avalon Waterways” itinerary. This was my second Avalon Waterways vacation, and it will not be my last. My friend Akram was excited to join me for this trip (full disclosure: all the best pictures in this blog are his). What follows are my impressions and musings about the trip, although we did so much that I couldn’t possibly include everything. Review: Festive Season On The Legendary Danube With Avalon Waterways

I’ve always wanted to visit the Christmas Markets and see the imperial cities of Prague and Budapest. And considering 2018 marks my 20th anniversary of my first visit to Europe (Vienna and Salzburg included) it just made perfect sense to celebrate by taking a river cruise along the Danube with Avalon Waterways to end the year on a European wonderland festive note.
