I’ve always wanted to visit the Christmas Markets and see the imperial cities of Prague and Budapest. And considering 2018 marks my 20th anniversary of my first visit to Europe (Vienna and Salzburg included) it just made perfect sense to celebrate by taking a river cruise along the Danube with Avalon Waterways to end the year on a European wonderland festive note.
Spending time at a Christmas market has been an annual tradition in Europe for centuries. Mixing iconic sights and seasonal delights in central Europe, this encounter features festive vendors selling their crafts and treats on the street in front of illuminated landmarks. The markets are perfect for Christmas shopping because most of the gifts and decorations are handmade, affordable and you can’t find anywhere else.

In early December of last year, I enjoyed the unique experience of visiting the Christmas Markets along the Danube. I love river cruising because it offers an easy-paced and relaxing way to see Europe, but the cruises during the season of the Christmas Markets really ramp up my excitement. In fairy-tale settings, we were warmly embraced by locals, including artisans themselves, and they invited us to join in for the time-honored traditions of Christmas in Europe.
