Avalon Waterways’ Legendary Danube itinerary was my first river cruise, and it will not be my last! The entire trip was an excellent adventure and a great value.

ur trip began with three days in historic Prague, a beautiful city with a picturesque skyline. After one day of included sightseeing—with visits to the Astronomical Clock and Hradcany Castle —we had an entire day to explore Prague on our own free time. My friend and I took a walking tour of the city called “Prague’s Secrets Revealed.” It included some off-the-beaten-path sights, such as beautiful gardens, ancient town squares and a bridge where couples leave locks to symbolize their everlasting love. We also visited the Terezin concentration camp, which was incredibly powerful and moving.

We then motored to Nuremberg to begin our fabulous cruise. European river cruising is a relaxing, low-stress way to visit multiple cities without having to repack your bags every day; I am definitely a new fan of this type of travel. We sailed to other ports in Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Melk, Vienna and Budapest. We visited lovely cities, towns and villages so rich in culture and history. Because the Sound of Music is one of my favorite movies of all times, I especially enjoyed the excursion to Salzburg, Austria, where it was filmed. Our tour guide entertained us with songs from the movie and we happily sang along.

The Avalon Tranquility should be proud of its outstanding food and superior on-board service. Our cruise director, Robert, was wonderful. He was knowledgeable, efficient and so much fun! He was also a natty dresser with suede shoes to match each outfit. We delighted in seeing what he would wear next.

I highly recommend this cruise and river cruising in general. A river cruising itinerary is the best way to see many places at a leisurely pace with all meals included and many included excursions. I say, go now! Or join me; next time, it’s the Rhine!
