Roatán, located between the islands of Utila and Guanaja is the largest of Honduras Bay Islands. It is approximately 40 miles long, and less than 4 miles wide at its widest point. The capital and most populated town is Coxen Hole, located in the Southwest of the island. Other important towns include Oak Ridge and French Harbor. Located near the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea second largest worldwide to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, it has become an important cruising and diving destination in Honduras. Tourism is its most important economic sector, though fishing is also an important source of income for islanders.
Roatan is one of the more least expensive and top
places in the world to take a scuba diving course. The island beaches are
idyllic enough for any tourist, with white sand, lucid turquoise water, and a
trimming of palm trees. Roatan boasts many of the most untouched and beautiful
beaches in the Caribbean. While Half Moon Bay in West End is the most heavily
visited and populated, literally from sunrise to sunset, there are lots of
stretches of sand where you may find yourself the only person around.
Roatan offers a variety of activities that the
entire family can take pleasure in together. Anthony's Key Resort has a
week long kids camp in which your children can learn to scuba dive and even get
a chance to swim with dolphins. If you don't have a whole week, you and your
children can still visit the dolphins and learn more about them and watch them
perform.
