Its roots, like the ship itself, are a mix of something contemporary and something classic: “Koning,” means king in Dutch - and is a salute to King Willem-Alexander, the Netherland’s first king in more than 100 years. And “dam,” because, after all … this is a Holland America Line ship, and the "dam" naming convention dates back to 1883.

  • Nieuw Amsterdam

Frequently Asked Questions About Holland America Cruises

  • What are the Speciality Dining Options?

Each ship features a Pinnace Grill, which offers high-end dining services for lunch and dinner. Another popular specialty restaurant is Canaletto, which features Italian cuisine. You have to pay extra for most of the meals in these dining venues. The cruise line recommends that guests make reservations at specialty restaurants before they board the ship. You can make lunch reservations at the Pinnacle Grill during your cruise.

  • What Food and Drink Packages are Offered?

You can save money when cruising if you purchase food and drink packages. For example, the Signature Dining Package covers dining for the evening at the Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto. HAL's Distinctive Dining Package covers one dinner each at the Tamarind, Canaletto, and Pinnacle Grill. You can also opt for the Pinnacle Package, which covers 2 nights at the Pinnacle Grill.

  • What is the evening dress code onboard?

During the evening, guests must follow a dress code in public places on the ship. Two different guest codes are featured: "Gala" or "Smart Casual." On Smart Casual nights, passengers can wear pants (no distressed denim) as well as t-shirts, skirts, or sweaters. During Gala nights, men are required to wear slacks with collared shirts and women may wear skirts, dresses, or dress slacks. Anyone not adhering to the evening dress code cannot enter the restaurants onboard.

  • Do you need to make a deposit to book a cruise?

Yes. You need to make a deposit within 5 days of your reservation to claim your spot. The amount is determined by the cost of the cruise. For Grand Voyages, a second deposit is required.

  • When is full payment for cruises due?

Usually, full payment must be remitted within 75 days of the cruise departure date. However, exact deadlines vary, depending on the cruise.

  • What is the average price for gratuities?

Gratuities average about $15 per person per day.

  • How do I avoid a cancellation fee?

To avoid paying a cancellation fee, you need to cancel your HAL cruise 57 to 120 days before the departure date, depending on the itinerary, time of year, and length of the cruise. If you don't act within this time frame, you will forego your deposit and a certain percent of the fare. The amount you will forfeit will depend on how close the cancellation date is to the departure date. If you buy a Cancellation Protection Plan, it guarantees a refund of 80% to 90% of the amount you have paid for the cruise. You just need to cancel 24 hours before the date of departure. Some plans also add medical coverage and lost baggage.

  • What is the best way to get my boarding pass?

Holland America encourages passengers to use the Online Check-In tool so they can get their boarding pass before embarkation. Otherwise, passengers should check in at the departure port at least 90 minutes before embarkation - the earlier the better.

  • What ID should I carry for a cruise that begins and ends in the US?

A cruise that begins and ends in the U.S. is called a closed-loop cruise. Closed loop cruises require that passengers submit a government I.D., such as a driver's license or resident card, along with proof of citizenship. Usually, a birth certificate can be used to prove citizenship.

  • How do I cancel a shore excursion?

You can cancel a shore excursion up to 3 days before you leave on your cruise trip.

Minimum Age Policy on Holland America Cruises

Guests under 21 years of age must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or chaperone that is at least 21 years old; one adult chaperone is required for every five people under the age of 21. Alcoholic beverages will not be served to guests under age 21. Due to the limited medical facilities on board, we will not accept reservations for infants six months or younger for non-Transocean sailings or 12 months or younger for Transocean sailings at time cruise commences.

Minors under the age of 18 traveling to foreign countries must be accompanied by both parents or have a notarized letter of consent signed by the parent(s) not traveling. If the other parent is deceased or the child has only one legal parent, a notarized statement must be obtained as proof. Your travel professional can provide additional information about this requirement.
Please Note: In an effort to prevent international child abduction, many governments have initiated procedures at entry and exit points. These often include requiring documentary evidence of relationship and permission for the child's travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian if not present. Having such documentation on hand, even if not required, may facilitate entry or departure. For specific information regarding the country to which you are traveling, please visit http://travel.state.gov for country-bycountry information. Parents, guardians and chaperones are responsible for overseeing the conduct of minors in their care. As such, minors may not be left unsupervised on board the ship. Minors should receive the same oversight that would be provided when visiting locations such as a large resort or theme park. A parent or legal guardian MUST accompany all children under the age of 18 on all tours for safety and liability reasons.

Minors Going Ashore Parents and guardians are responsible for deciding whether or not minors under age 16 are allowed to go ashore without adult supervision. If you want to permit a minor traveling with you to go ashore without an adult companion, please discuss this in advance with the shi'’s Security Officer so that they can make a notation of this in our gangway control system software. Absent this approval, our security personnel will generally prohibit minors from leaving the ship without an adult companion although we cannot provide absolute assurances in this regard. It is ultimately the responsibility of parents and guardians to ensure that minors traveling with them act in accordance with their instructions.

Tipping Policy on Holland America Cruises

Our crew works very hard to make sure that every aspect of your cruise meets the highest standards. This includes those crew members who serve you directly, such as Dining Room wait staff and the stewards who service your stateroom each day. There are also many others who support their efforts whom you may never meet, such as galley and laundry staff. To ensure that the efforts of all of our crew members are recognized and rewarded, a daily Hotel Service Charge is automatically added to each guest’s shipboard account.

The daily Hotel Service Charge for suites is US$12.00 per guest per day, and US$11.50 per guest per day for other staterooms. (The charges are subject to change without notice)

If our service exceeds or fails to meet your expectations, you are free to adjust this amount at the end of each segment and/or voyage. The Hotel Service Charge is paid to Holland America Line crew members, and represents an important part of their compensation. A 15% Bar Service Charge is automatically added to bar charges and Dining Room wine purchases. In terminals, airports, ports of call and on shore excursions, we suggest that you extend gratuities consistent with customary local practices.

Smoking Policy on Holland America Cruises

Presently, all indoor areas are designated non-smoking with the exception of:

- Casino
- Northern Lights Disco (ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdam & ms Zuiderdam only)
- Seaview Bar (except ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam & ms Statendam)

All showrooms are nonsmoking during performances.

There are selected areas of the outside decks where smoking is allowable. Cigar and pipe smoking is only permitted on the outside decks.
Our ships do not currently have "nonsmoking" staterooms; however, all rooms are thoroughly cleaned after each cruise to assure the comfort of our guests.

All staterooms will be non-smoking areas, in addition to the other areas that were already defined as non-smoking. Smoking will continue to be permitted outside on stateroom verandahs. There are designated areas available for smoking both inside the ships and on outside decks as detailed above.

Wonder trip!

This is not a Cruise itinerary I would repeat. There were too many tender ports with inadequate facilities for the guests. Standing in lines for 1 to 1 1/2 hours in the heat was most unpleasant.

Thank you for putting together an amazing Transatlantic Cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to Rotterdam. Holland America ship was fantastic. The staff was amazing, the food was like going to a Five Star restaurant every day. The accommodations better than I expected. We had a fantastic travel agent!
