Aghios Nikolaos, one of the island’s best-known

Aghios Nikolaos is a coastal town on the Greek island of Crete.
In the year 2000 the Municipality of Aghios Nikolaos which includes part
of the surrounding villages counted about 19,000 inhabitants. Aghios
Nikolaos is the capital of the
nomos (province) of
Lasithi.
The name Aghios Nikolaos means
Saint Nicholas. Aghios Nikoloas fuses the past with the present to
preserve the priceless cultural heritage that makes this remarkable city.
Things to Do
The main attraction in Aghios Nikolaos are the famous "blue flag" beaches.
You must visit at least one of the many beaches this beautiful city has to
offer. Here are some of the beaches with their special qualities: E.O.T
has the only mini golf course in town also enjoy an athletics course and
competition sized pool. Amos is located in the heart of the town, ideal
for diving, watersports and of course shopping. Amoudara, a small well organized
beach ideal for diving and watersports. This beach is located next to
restaurants and shops along the main road to Kalo Chorio.
Aghios has many sights and activities, with over forty years in the
tourism industry, you will not be disappointed. Visit the charming lake
that is rich with folklore. It is believed that Athena and Artemis bathed
in its waters. While by the lake enjoy a performance from local entertainers in
the open-air theatre.
Shopping in Aghios is an enjoyable experience,
you can find a wide selection of Cretan artwork, jewelry and beautiful
embroidered work. There are also many pieces of woven goods and Byzantine
icons. Of course all this shopping will get you hungry, so stop and visit
some quaint coffee shops and taverns serving traditional food.
The Folklore Museum of Aghios Nikolaos is one of the oldest buildings in town.
Here you will find many exhibits of traditional Cretan handcrafts, artwork,
weaponry, photographs and currency.
Lato's ruins have been preserved beautifully and date back from the 4th-2nd
century B.C. The area is evidence of the last habitation there, the settlement
seems to have been abandoned in stages as the people moved closer to the sea.
Lato has a wondrous view of the entire region. Staring out you will
understand why over three thousand years ago the Dorian people chose to settle
here.
