Overview

The Port of Kagoshima is situated in the southern part of Japan's island of Kyushu. Situated in a subtropical region, it is often hit by typhoons. Among its geographical features are the most important volcanoes Kirishimayama, Kaimondake, and Sakurajima, one of the world's more active. Offshore are various islands. Kagoshima is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea and by Kumamoto and Miyazaki Prefectures. In the 19th century the ancient provinces of Satsuma and Osumi and assumed its present name and borders. The Port of Kagoshima is touched from above with some of the most outstanding scenery in Japan, leading it to be often termed the "Naples of the Orient". The port is a multi-purpose harbor with 7 separate port districts, each with its own functional capabilities. In particular the main port area, steeped in history and culture, is a location that can proudly show off its spectacular world natural splendor with the active volcano of Sakurajima and the tranquil Kinko bay spreading out before it. It also plays a major role for ships operating on the maritime lanes between the outer islands, including Sakurajima, Yakushima and Tanegashima. Solid progress is being made on the development of a pleasurable and elegant waterfront which is being enjoyed by both tourists and the citizens.

Things to Do

A beautiful thing to go see at the port of Kagoshima is the different flower gardens like the Iso Teien Garden, and the Senganen Garden. It is a vast, ancient Japanese style garden, which overlooks Sakurajima and Kinko Bay, was once owned by the ruling family of Kagoshima.

You can also go see the Lava Fields. To go along with the lava fields is a trip to Sakurajima Volcano. A ferry ride takes you to this smoking volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in Japan.
