Overview

Pointe-a-Pitre, on Grande-Terre, is the leading port and commercial center. Pointe-a-Pitre is the main town of the French Caribbean island and French department d'outre-mer of Guadeloupe, it has an estimated population of about 29,000 residents. The town was severely damaged by earthquake in 1843 and by fire in 1871. The town lies on the southwestern coast of Grande-Terre island, on the eastern shore of the Salee River, a channel that separates Grande-Terre from Basse-Terre, the western island of Guadeloupe. Numerous islets in the southern bay guard the approach to the town. Its main exports are bananas and rum. Pointe-a-Pitre lies almost exactly in the middle of the two islands, on the western side of Grande-Terre. The city is not quite as charming as Fort-de-France, Martinique, but it does have its own distinctive pleasures for those bold enough to seek them. Guadeloupe is the southernmost of the Leeward Islands, just north of the Windward Islands.

Things to Do

If you want to learn about this great island they have a couple of museums to get the history of Pointe-a-Pitre. Visit the Musee Schoelcher or the Edger Clerc Archeological Museum. Both have there own specialties but with either one you won't be disappointed.

Or you can go to the Aquarium de la Guadeloupe. This aquarium has all of the different species of fish that dwell in this region. Take a golfing trip to Golf Municipal Saint-Francois, which is the best golf course on the island.
