Overview

First used by the Phoenicians as a major trading port, the Port of Malaga is over 3000 years old. Situated on the southern “sunshine coast” of Spain, it is the second most important cruise terminal in the country. With plenty of ancient architecture and traditional taverns and plazas, it’s an excellent place to stroll around. With a cosmopolitan yet traditional feel, Malaga is a great port city for those who enjoy gastronomical pursuits and who are wine connoisseurs. Visitors will enjoy excellent shopping, a vibrant culinary scene, alfresco dining, numerous beaches, and plenty of warm, sunny weather.

Iconic Neighborhoods

• Old Town- The main street through the town center is lined by designer shops, cafes, and tapas eateries, perfect for a relaxing stroll. It is the area with the city’s most famous monuments, the Alcazaba Fortress and Gibralfaro castle.
• La Malagueta- A trendy area of the city with high rise buildings and easy access to the Mediterranean. Stroll along the Paseo Del Muelle Uno and grab a bite to eat while watching the scenery. Visit the popular La Malagueta beach and see the historical Neo-Mudejar style bullring.

Activities

• Visit the Alcazaba Fortress, the best-preserved Moorish fortress in Spain. Built around the 11th century atop the old Roman construction in a strategic area over-looking the sea, its original purpose was to guard against pirates. Here you can see examples of old Moorish architecture and some of best panoramic views of the city. A museum on the grounds shows exhibits of Roman pottery and statuary plus Moorish artifacts found at the site. At the foot of the hill, also see the old Roman theater from the 3rd century.
• Tour through the Museo Del Vino, the Malaga wine museum, housed in the 18th century Baroque Biedmas Palace. Here visitors can learn about the wine culture and history in the region dating back over a thousand years, and at the end, finish off the tour with a wine tasting of local varieties.

Family Friendly

• Take the kids spelunking in the Caves of Nerja. The network of caves stretches 3 miles and it is perfect for all ages. Visitors can walk along paths that are maintained, safe, and well-lit. Kids will love the rock formations and the whole family can marvel at the world’s largest stalagmite at 105 feet.
• As the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, take everyone to the Museo Picasso Málaga inside the Buenavista Palace. With over 230 works of art by Picasso, adults will enjoy walking through to see different works of art while kids will love the hands-on, educational activities.
