Overview

Puerto Limon, is the capital city of the province of Costa Rica. It is that country's chief Caribbean port, and has a population of around 110,000 inhabitants. The city, and the province in general, is home to most of Costa Rica's citizens of African descent. Initially from Jamaica, these workers were brought to the area in the late 19th century to build the railroad line from San Jose to Limon. The train enhanced the country's banana exports and economy in general. By the time the line was closed, the city was the country's primary harbor. Christopher Columbus, and his crew were the first Europeans to lay eyes on the shores and forest-covered mountains of Costa Rica. On the fourth and final voyage to the Americas, in 1502, he anchored near what is now the port city and provincial capital of Limon. His brief dealings with the native people he met on the mainland were evidently good-natured.
