Located on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii, Kailua-Kona is also home to the annual Kona Marathon and Family Run a sporting event for runners of all ages and skill levels that takes place along the scenic coast of Hawaii. It is renowned in the sports world as the site of the Hawaii Iron Man Triathlon. The town had a population of about 10,000. The town is designated Kailua-Kona to differentiate it from the larger, Kailua located on windward O'auh although it is referred to as Kona in everyday speech. Many place names in the Hawaiian Islands are repeated on several islands, but the two Kailua's are the only confusing conflict in this regard.

Things to Do

The Sadie Seymour Botanical Garden allows visitors to experience the islands flora up close and also offers plant education to interested parties. A variety of aquatic activities are available in the area, including kayaking, rafting, and snorkeling. Accommodations run from bed and breakfasts to full resorts, ensuring a wide choice of lodging for travelers. This area is also well known for its coffee production, and tours of the local plantations.
