Kodiak Island is renowned for the Kodiak brown bears, sport fishing, one of the biggest commercial fishing ports in the nation, and the magnificent green that the island turns during the summer is why Kodiak is affectionately called Alaska's Emerald Isle. In 2004 312 million pounds of fish and shellfish passed through its port for a total value of 91 million dollars, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service.
