Monemvasia is a port in Greece. Monemvasia is also known as "The Gibraltar of Greece", due to the giant rock sits in front of the town. The town was freed from Ottoman rule on August 1,1821, during the Greek War of Independence. In more recent history, the town has seen a resurrection in importance with growing numbers of tourists visiting the site and the region. The medieval buildings have been renovated, many of them changed to hotels. Monemvasia is walled in and has a two-gate entry to the town. The city lies across as causeway connecting it to the mainland. In Medieval times, the restricted access made the town a steady fortress. The town has two parts, the current settlement called the "Lower Town" and an "Upper Town" with some Byzantine era ruins.
If you stop at the port of Monemvasia you must go see the Rock of Monemvasia. You won't have to go far you can see it from almost anywhere in the city. The rock has stood alone since it separated from the mainland in 337 AD.
Take a
trip to the Moslem Mosque, it was built in the 16th Century by the Turks.
Visit a couple of religious sites in Monemvasia. Go to the Agia Sofia Church,
the Church of Christ in Chains, and Agios Pavlos. Visit any or all you won't be
disappointed.
