Overview

The City of Monterey is located on Monterey Bay along the Pacific coast in northern California. The city had a total population of about 31,000. The city is noted for its heavy history of resident artists beginning in the late 1800s and its historically famed fishery. Monterey had long been renowned for the rich fishery in Monterey Bay. That changed in the 1950s, when the local fishery business buckled due to over fishing. Since the 1880s, visitors have been enjoying the impressive beauty of the Coast. Located between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Monterey County's ocean scenery, and historic communities continue to call upon adventure-seekers, writers and vacationers. And no other California county can boast almost 100 miles of magnificent Pacific coastline.
