Marseilles' harbor is the largest in the country, and one of the most important of the Mediterranean Sea. In the bay fronting Marseille are a number of islands, including the islet of If, site of the 16th-century Chteau dIf, featured in Alexander Dumass romance The Count of Monte Cristo. numerous forts guard the harbor, and on a high strip of land projecting west into the bay is the 19th-century church of Notre Dame de la Garde.

Another favorite Marseille attraction is Le Pouce it is a bronze sculpture that was created in 1989.
