Okinawa is Japan's southernmost city and consists of hundreds of islands known as the Ryukyu Islands. Okinawa's capital, Naha, is located in the southern part of the biggest and most densely inhabited island. Following the end of World War II and the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, for 27 years Okinawa was under US administration. During this time the US military established several bases on Okinawa Honto and elsewhere. On May 15, 1972, Okinawa once again became part of Japan, although to this day the US maintains a huge military presence there. While they provide a source of revenue for the island's 1 million residents, they are also a source of considerable tension between the US and Japan. The island is mostly composed of coral rock, and rainwater filtering through that coral has given the island many caves, which played an crucial role in the Battle of Okinawa. Okinawa has a large proportion of population living to one hundred years of age. It is accredited to their healthy diet rich in pork, sea vegetables, and fish.
Okinawa is said to have the most beautiful
beaches in all of Japan and normally enjoys above 68 degree Fahrenheit weather
for most of the year. It also boast many coral reefs in this region of Japan and
wildlife is abundant.
