Overview

Palermo is the principal city of Sicily, Italy. It has an estimated population of 700,000 residents. Palermo survived almost the entire fascist period intact, but during the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943 it experienced heavy damage. The value of Palermo got another boost when Sicily became an autonomous region with extended self-rule. But any improvement was thwarted by the rising power of the Mafia, which still today is a dramatic feature of the city, as well as the whole Southern Italy. Palermo is a city with massive problems, but is also a city of almost three millennia of history, beautiful palaces and churches, colorful markets, marvelous food and a unique cultural identity.

Things to Do

The Four Corners of Palermo, where each 17th-century Spanish Baroque facade is adorned with a statue, is one of the city's most memorable sights.

Take a trip to the Palace of the Normans, it is an ancient castle in Palermo. This Norman Castle was completed by William II during the 12th century, and is considered one of the most splendid Arab-Norman building in the world.

Another historical site is the San Giovanni degli Eremiti. This key monument is well-known for its Arab design, which contains three domes.
