Valdez is a city located in Alaska with a population of about 4,100. The city is one of the most vital ports in Alaska. The port of Valdez was named in 1790 by the Spanish explorer Don Salvador Fidalgo. The current Alaskan pronunciation is Val-DEEZ instead of Valdés. Because the Port of Valdez was an ice-free port, a town developed there in 1898. Today the port is busy handling vessels from all over.
