Devil's Island is the smallest island off the coast of French Guiana. It has an area of about 36 acres. It was a notorious French penal colony until 1946. The rocky, palm-covered island is 131 ft high and is most famous for its former prison for political prisoners and for its brutality. Over time, they became known collectively as "Devil's Island". More than 80,000 prisoners sent to the harsh conditions at disease-infested Devil's Island were never seen again. Other than by boat, the only way out was through a dense jungle; accordingly, very few convicts ever managed to escape.
The beaches is a great place to start your tour.
But not to swim. There are not much beach activities here. The reason being is
that the waters are shark infested. That is one of the reason that the prison
was built here. It would be to hard for the prisoners to get out. The sharks can
be seen all over the island, and it is easy to take a picture of them.
You can visit the old prison but be very careful because it is in bad shape.
Plenty of photo opportunities here. Cell are scattered throughout the island and
you can actually go inside the cells. A great experience for everybody.
