Overview

Portree is the largest town on Skye in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. It has a busy harbor, and framed by cliffs. The name Portree means Kings Harbor. The town is named after King James V who visited the island to meet with the clan chiefs in 1540, trying to unite the squabbling clans of the MacLeods and the MacDonalds. The main town of Portree lies above and behind the harbor. The primary focus of the town is Somerled Square, home to the local war memorial. The harbor, surrounded by cliffs, is central to life in Portree and is used by fishing boats and pleasure vessels.
