Overview

Punta del Este is a popular spot on the southern tip of Uruguay. Initially a small fishing town in a peninsula protruding into the South Atlantic, Punta is now a thriving international resort, stretching over numerous miles of coastline. Punta del Este is served by an international airport located near Laguna del Sauce, on the fringes of the resort. It is considered to be the border between the Rio de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean. For this reason it is one of the only beach resorts in the world to have two different kinds of beaches. La Brava, which has waves, and La Mansa, which has no waves. Its beaches are lined with large numbers of high-rise buildings and hotels, and it has become a key vacation spot for people from different countries all over the world with about 500,000 to 600,000 people visiting the city annually.
