Overview

Gozo is an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, second in size to Malta Island. Gozo is part of the country of Malta. The island has an estimated population of 31,000,with 7,000 of which live in its capital, Rabat, also known as Victoria. In July of 1551 Ottomans and Barbary pirates occupied Gozo and enslaved all 4,000 or 5,000 residents, bringing them to Tarhuna Wa Msalata in Libya. The history of Gozo is clearly attached with the history of Malta, since Gozo has been governed by Malta, with the exception of a short period of self-rule between October 28, 1798 and September 5, 1800. The construction of a bridge between the two islands was the subject of debate for years. At present the island is reachable by ferry boat or helicopter.
