Belawan is in North Sumatra province, Indonesia, on the Deli River from its mouth, where the city's port is situated. The largest city in Sumatra and the fourth largest in Indonesia, Medan is the marketing, commercial, and transportation center of a rich agricultural area containing great tobacco, rubber, and palm oil estates. Coffee and tea are also grown in the area. Industries include the production of machinery and tile, and automobile construction. Medan, gateway to the picturesque Lake Toba region, is a tourist center, with an international airport; attractions include the Great Mosque (the largest in Sumatra) and the Palace of the Sultan of Deli. The port was originally constructed by the Dutch in the first two decades of the 20th century. It exports tobacco, rubber, tea, resin, copra, spices, and palm oil.

is an enormous volcanic lake that is bigger than Singapore, with an island in
the center. Created by a massive volcanic eruption about 70,000 years ago, Toba
is the largest caldera on Earth.
