Porto Santo Island is northeast of Madeira Island. The islands mainland is diverse with farmlands, beaches, forests, grasslands and mountaintops. The main industry is tourism which is expected because of the islands natural beauty. Porto Santo has about 6 miles of sandy beaches. The island has an airport which serves flights to Funchal, which is about a 15-minute flight. The population is around 5,000. Some say this island is one of the best kept secrets in the region, even though it's main source of revenue is tourism, this island is still almost unknown by many.
Porto Santo is known for its world renowned Golf
Course which was created in 2004. This 18-hole 72 par golf course for the
professional players or a nine-hole 3 par circuit called "Pitch and Put" is a
must for all golf lovers. If you are not into golf the complex also features
tennis courts or horseback riding.
With miles of sandy beaches watersports is a favorite among tourists and
residents alike. Windsurfing, scuba-diving and sailing is all offered
among the beaches. If you want to just relax then a simple walk along the
beach will sure to calm your soul as you take in the exquisite beauty.
