Progreso is situated about 25 miles from Merida the capital of the Sate of Yucatan. This port was a fishing village for many years before it started becoming commercialized in the mid 1950's when people started building summer homes here. People started flocking to Progreso during the winter because of its tropical climate, low rent and laid back way of life. Now Progreso is a bustling town with shopping, nice eateries and tourist activities. Progreso is a beautiful port with spectacular beaches with gentle waves which makes it nice for swimming, boat races and sailing.
Progreso is known for its beautiful beaches, which you will find many tourists
and residence sun-bathing on. Water sports are very popular here.
Along the beach you can find shops that rent snorkel equipment or boats that
will take you out to explore the marine life. Near Progreso is the
Alacranes reef and Perez Island which is also a good place to snorkel.
Shopping is always unique in Progreso, shops can be found as soon as you
disembark with souvenirs from hats, to panchos, maracas, hammocks, shirts, shot
glasses, art and jewelry.
