Overview

Puerto Egas is a lava rock beach where several iguanas live and breed, it is located in the western James Island. It has been altered considerably by the activities of a salt extraction operation and the large amount of animal life that live in the region.

Things to Do

There is so much to view in Puerto Egas your senses will be overloaded with all the marine life and beautiful weather it has to offer.  Take a journey through the land and see  fur seal grottos, flycatchers, mockingbirds, yellow warblers, oystercatchers, pelicans, brown noddies, boobies and fur seals, sea lions, sally light-footed crabs, marine iguanas and lava lizards.

Take an excursion to visit the origin of Puerto Egas the salt crater. For decades was extracted here but in the 1950's it was abandoned leaving behind a variety of machines and buildings.  The trail you will be on follows a path once used by the wagon trains.  While viewing the old trails you will see goats feeding alongside the road and splendid birdlife that inhabits the island. Finally, reaching the crater you will see an incredible vista.  See the extinct volcano whose floor has sunken below sea level.
