  The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is one of the most visited landmarks in Sarajevo. It's a centerpiece of the old town with lots of historical, religious, and cultural significance. It's the largest mosque in the Balkans and remains the main mosque for the local Islamic community. Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is named after the former Bosnian governor during the Ottoman rule. It was completed in the 16th century in an Ottoman-style architecture but was renovated after war damage. The interior and exterior of the structure showcase detailed walls and ornate decorations.

  Visitors are welcome to enter the mosque, but proper clothing and covering are required to enter.

  Friday is a massive prayer day when lots of people go to the mosque for prayer. It's also closed on religious holidays.

  Sarajevo was founded in the 15th century on the site of the Baščaršija, the old market bazaar.   Blagaj is a popular tourist village most known for its Buna River Spring. The entire village is a spiritual destination that creates an atmosphere of peace and serenity thanks to the calm flow of the springs. The Blagaj Buna River Spring originates in a small cave that visitors can take a short boat ride to see the inside of it. It's a picturesque river with pure emerald color. It's the focal point of the entire village, with lots of restaurants and shops established along the cliffs overlooking the river.

  Blagaj Buna River Spring is a favorite photography spot because of the unique scenery. Be sure to walk around to the different viewpoints to get the best shots and views of the village.

  Even before you visit Bosnia, you've probably already seen pictures of the iconic Tekija Monastery. The monastery is located in Blagaj, on a cliffside next to the Buna River cave. It's famously photographed, but exploring the site reveals a lot more to its history. Tekija Monastery was built nearly 600 years ago, making it one of the oldest in the region. It's a popular tourist destination to explore the inside of the house, which features a mausoleum, a Turkish bath, and prayer rooms. The house remains preserved in its original condition while showcasing traditional decorations in each room.  

  You Should Know

  Tekija Monastery is still actively used for prayer held a few nights out of the week. Since it's a religious site, visitors must wear proper clothing and remove shoes before entering.

  Stand on the riverbanks of the Neretva River for great views of the Stari Most Bridge and people jumping into the river

  The iconic Stari Most Bridge in Mostar is unavoidable when you visit the town. The pedestrian bridge connects the two sides of the town over the Neretva River and is a popular site for photos and entertainment. The original Stari Most Bridge, or Mostar Bridge, was built in the 16th century but later rebuilt in 2004 in its original design. It's a great example of Balkan Islamic architecture with its arched design. It stretches 29 meters across the river at a height ranging from 20-24m depending on the water level.   It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most famous landmarks in Bosnia.

  Visit the Stari Most Bridge is during the summertime when locals use it for entertainment. People jump from the bridge into the water below in front of crowds gathering on the bridge and the riverbanks. It also hosts a bridge jumping competition.

  Climb inside the historic Sarajevo Tunnel to see how numerous civilians escaped during wartimes

  The Sarajevo Tunnel was a key lifeline to Bosnians in Sarajevo during the Bosnian War. With the city occupied by the Serbian Army, the tunnel was built in 1993 to help transport people and resources in and out of the city discreetly. The Sarajevo Tunnel Museum extended for 960 meters outside of the city, past the airport, and into two local neighborhoods. It was used to move over 20 million tons of food into the city and help civilians escape, including the President. The house used as the tunnel's northern entrance is converted into a museum established to preserve its history.  

  You Should Know

  The Sarajevo Tunnel Museum is the best place to learn about the tunnel's legacy. Visitors can walk through a section of the tunnel, watch a mini-documentary, view photos, and see artifacts collected from the war.

  Reflect on the tragedies of the Srebrenica Massacre at the Srebrenica Memorial Center

  Several locations around Bosnia experienced great tragedies during war times, with one of the most significant sites being in Srebrenica. The Srebrenica Memorial Center commemorates the lives lost during the Srebrenica Genocide in 1995. Srebrenica Memorial Center is a massive cemetery for over 8.000 people who were tragically killed during the events. Most of the deaths were Muslim refugees attempting to escape the war. The site opened in 2003 by former US President Bill Clinton. There are over 8,000 gravestones installed on the site, as well as a wall of names.  

  You Should Know

  Srebrenica Memorial Center is a place for reflection of one of the worst tragedies in Bosnia history. Even to this day, it conducts new burial services for new lives discovered to be lost, and there are still thousands of people unaccounted for.
