  • Make sure you get some of the local currency, Bulgarian lev, because not all places, such as street food vendors or smaller souvenir shops, will accept debit or credit cards.
  • It is safe to drink the tap water in most places in Bulgaria, but if you want to be safe, purchase mineral water from the local convenience store.
  • Take the time to learn some basics in the local language. This way, if you do need help from a local, you can at least ask a few common questions. Even if you just learn how to say "please," "hello," and "thank you," it can go a long way!
  • In general, it's recommended to tip at least 10% of your total bill when you eat out at a restaurant in Bulgaria. Tipping is also recommended at hotels, for about $1 per night.
