Egypt Tours Highlights

Iconic Sites and Attractions of Egypt

Egypt, a land brimming with ancient wonders and cultural landmarks, offers an array of iconic sites that are essential for any touring itinerary.

The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx - The Pyramids of Giza, standing as the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, are a must-visit. These monumental tombs, built for Pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, showcase the architectural genius of ancient Egyptians. Nearby, the Great Sphinx, with its lion's body and a human head, adds to the mystery and grandeur of this ancient site.

The Valley of the Kings - Located on the west bank of the Nile near Luxor, the Valley of the Kings is the burial site of pharaohs such as Tutankhamun and Ramses II. Tours here involve exploring elaborately decorated tombs, which provide insights into the beliefs and funerary practices of ancient Egypt.

Temple of Karnak - The Temple of Karnak in Luxor, a vast complex of sanctuaries, kiosks, and obelisks, is dedicated to the Theban gods. It is renowned for its massive columns and the Avenue of Sphinxes. Guided tours provide a deeper understanding of ancient Egyptian religion and architecture.

Abu Simbel Temples - The twin temples of Abu Simbel, built by Pharaoh Ramses II, are awe-inspiring structures carved out of a mountainside. These temples relocated during the construction of the Aswan High Dam, are a testament to both ancient and modern engineering feats.

Sinai Peninsula - The Sinai Peninsula offers a mix of adventure and spirituality. Tours to Mount Sinai, where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments, provide an opportunity for both hiking and religious reflection. The nearby St. Catherine's Monastery is a site of Christian heritage and art.

The Red Sea Riviera - The Red Sea coast, known as the Red Sea Riviera, is a paradise for divers and beachgoers. Towns like Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh offer world-class diving and snorkeling experiences, showcasing vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Tours here also include beach relaxation and water sports.

The Western Desert - The Western Desert features unique landscapes, from the white chalk formations of the White Desert to the lush oases like Siwa, known for its natural springs and ancient ruins. Tours here often include desert safaris, camel treks, and stargazing.

Nile River Cruises - A cruise along the Nile River offers a serene way to experience Egypt's landscapes and historical sites. These tours often stop at key riverside attractions, combining relaxation with cultural exploration.

Egypt Tours Travel Tips

  • The Arabic language is central to Egyptian culture, with its rich literary tradition. Tours often include visits to historic libraries and cultural centers in Cairo and Alexandria, showcasing Egypt's contribution to Arabic literature.
  • Religious festivals play a significant role in Egyptian culture. Islamic celebrations like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha and Christian festivals like Coptic Christmas are celebrated with enthusiasm. Tours during these times offer a glimpse into Egypt's religious diversity and traditions.
  • In a country like Egypt, where language barriers and different customs can be challenging for some travelers, having a tour guide to navigate these aspects is a significant advantage.
  • Make sure to exchange some of your currency for Egyptian Pounds. While many places will accept your credit card, it's safest always to make sure to have some local currency just in case while traveling.
  • Keep in mind that taking pictures at some places like the pyramids may require a small donation.
  • One must-try dish is 'Koshari,' a popular street food made with rice, pasta, lentils, chickpeas, fried onions, and a spiced tomato sauce. Tours in Cairo often include stops at local eateries to sample this vegetarian delight. 'Ful medames,' a fava bean stew typically eaten for breakfast, is another staple, enjoyed with freshly baked bread.
  • For meat lovers, 'Kebab and kofta' (grilled meat skewers and meatballs) are a culinary highlight. Tours to traditional restaurants often feature these grilled meats with an array of dips and salads. In coastal areas like Alexandria, seafood is a must-try, with freshly caught fish and seafood prepared in Mediterranean style.
  • An escorted tour in Egypt offers a comprehensive and enriching travel experience, combining historical exploration, cultural immersion, and the convenience of expertly managed travel logistics. It's an ideal way to experience the wonders of Egypt with ease and depth.

Egypt Tours Things To Do

  • Explore the beautiful Valley of the Kings
Explore the beautiful Valley of the Kings

The Valley of the Kings is a gorgeous Necropolis referred to as the Valley of the Gates of the Kings by the locals. It dates back to the 11th century BC and is a series of tombs cut out of rock from the New Kingdom. The tombs were used for 500 years in total, and they're located in Luxor. There are said to be around 60 different tombs in total in this valley, all of whom are, as the name suggests, kings of Egypt. The Valley of Kings is most well-known for holding the tomb of Tutankhamun.

    You Should Know

Inside, there is an abundance of ruins and tombs, even though not a whole lot remains, unfortunately. Throughout Karnak, you can find ruins of old churches, palaces, gardens, and even houses. Try to find a map online to make the most of your trip so that you can at least get somewhat of an idea of what you're seeing and searching for in Karnak.

It's a monument made out of sandstone that features a statue with a human head but a lion's body. If you plan on seeing only one thing during your Egypt tour, make sure that it's the iconic Great Sphinx of Giza. It's one landmark you'll never forget.

Egypt Tour Packages

Selecting the best time to tour Egypt is key to enjoying all that this historic destination has to offer. Egypt's climate is generally hot and dry, with variations throughout the year. The best time to tour Egypt is during its cooler months, when the climate is more favorable for exploring the country's rich historical sites and vibrant outdoor markets, making your touring experience both comfortable and enjoyable.

  • Winter - October to April

The ideal time for touring is during Egypt's winter months, from October to April. During this period, the weather is cooler and more comfortable, making it perfect for exploring outdoor attractions like the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor's Valley of the Kings, and the bustling streets of Cairo. Days are pleasantly warm, while nights can be cool, especially in desert areas. If you're interested in Nile cruises, the period between October and April is also preferable, as the Nile's water levels and the weather are conducive for a comfortable journey.

  • Summer - May to September

From May to September, Egypt experiences its summer season, with temperatures often soaring high, especially in southern regions like Aswan and Luxor. Reviews for Egypt Tours and Vacations

Wonders of Egypt was an absolute amazing experience. Everything from the beginning to end was like clockwork. I felt safe and taken care of at all times.

Loretta K

Tauck did a terrific job. Everything was taken care of for me.

Patricia H

Trafalgar took care of everything so we did not have to worry about any aspect of our travel, connections, or destination. We were not prepared for all the additional tipping we were asked to do (bus drivers, van drivers, boat). Also, based on the readings we did for travel to Egypt, US dollars could have been used virtually everywhere. Information indicated wheeled suitcases with handles will not fit in the cabin of the plane. There was no question we could have taken wheeled luggage on the plane. Appropriate dress for women: the only time there was an issue was on a single day when we attended a specific mosque. Dress for women did not have to be as strict as readings indicated. Vendors on the Nile Cruise Ship: T-shirts were being sold for $55 USD and other souvenirs were being sold at triple pricing or more than the hotel gift shop. Scheduling inexpensive souvenir shopping would be appreciated.
