Reviews for Mongolia Tours and Vacations
Due to the heavy and congested traffic in Ulaanbaatar we missed several places we were supposed to see. Traffic was so heavy that I feel Gate 1 needs to revise not only the schedule of the itinerary but also the hotel where we stayed in downtown Ulaanbaatar. We flew back into the city for one night in the middle of the itinerary. This should be looked at to make travel easier. The country is fascinating and I enjoyed what we did see but again we missed several sights. I don't think the tourist season is to blame and it seems the traffic is always bad except in the middle of the night. I have been to 114 countries and never experienced such horrible traffic. Another issue is the lack of "whispers". We needed them. Our guide would tell a small group some things the rest of us missed hearing. For instance, what we were going to do or what we were seeing. And she often changed her mind on activity times and that caused confusion.

The roads were almost all rough dirt roads. The drivers drove very fast, The roads were like riding on a roller coaster for hours. One ger had beetles falling from the top onto our bed which required using flashlight to swat the bugs out. The shower had so many bugs the next morning that the drain stopped up. Another room had about 50 flies inside the window. After killing about 10-15, another bunch would come in. The door was shut and we could not see any openings. The guide was good and the sights were good! The last two nights we only got about three hours sleep each night.

You need to have an open mind when traveling to Mongolia. The Ger (traditional homes that you will be staying at) are very basic; not what you would expect from a US hotel. The traffic in their capital, Ulaanbaatar was horrendous; airport transfers took up to 2 hours and bus rides to nearby attractions from the hotel were also very long. All meals were included but for many, there was no choice and it was mainly meat. But seeing the sites and being at a nice, sparsely populated country (outside of the capital) made it all worth it.
