Cairo, Egypt is where you can see the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx – a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Sitting on the west bank of the Nile River, the Great Sphinx of Giza is made out of limestone and was built to protect the pyramid tombs. According to archeologists, the date of the carving goes back to 2500 BC. The Sphinx's head was formed to resemble the Pharaoh Khafra. You will find that Cairo is a hub for adventure, as it is also home to the Egyptian museum and close to other important Nile River destinations, such as Luxor and Aswan.
Located in southern or Upper Egypt, Luxor is situated close to some of Egypt's most important ancient sites. Some of the major sites include the necropolis of the Valley of the Kings and Karnak, a celebrated temple complex that was constructed over a 200-year period.
Built over a span of hundreds of years by various pharaohs, including Ramses II and Tutankhamun, the Luxor Temple served as the most significant and largest religious building in ancient Egypt. During that time, Luxor was called Thebes.
This site, which represents the largest religious attraction worldwide, features three major temples. The largest of these temples if the Precinct of Amun-Re, which is dedicated to the god Amon. It is the only part of the complex open for public viewing. The Precinct of Montu and the Precinct of Mut cannot be accessed by tourists.
Sitting on the east bank of Luxor and the Nile River, the Mummification Museum can be easily found, as a large sign directed you to the entrance. The museum provides details on the mummification techniques used by ancient Egyptians, which included humans, household pets, and crocodiles.
Located in southernmost Egypt, Aswan is a relaxed and comfortable cruise city. A trip to Aswan provides a nice respite from the busier and more crowded places of Cairo and Egypt. Once known as a Gateway to Africa, Aswan provides the ideal opportunity to see the sites and attractions of southernmost Egypt. Many of the journeys can be managed on day trips. Stop at a café for some mint tea on Aswan's waterfront promenade. The corniche provides a welcome interlude for relaxation and socialization after a day of sightseeing.
A major tourist attraction, Elephantine Island features the Ruins of Abu and the Aswan Museum. See the Temple of Khnum and Temple of Satet, which are part of the Ruins of Abu (the most ancient settlement in Aswan).
The Philae Temple represents one of Upper Egypt's more beguiling and artistic landmarks, known for its architectural symmetry and detailed reliefs. Saved by the rising floodwaters of Lake Nassar, the monument was moved from Philae Island and relocated to Agilika Island where it now stands.
The best time to embark on a cruise down the Nile River is between the months of October and April. During this time, the temperatures are not as hot, which is important, especially when taking day trip excursions.
You will not find a great deal of shade, if any, around the stone temples and tombs. Therefore, you need to make sure you wear sunscreen, a hat, and protective clothing.
Remember: The temperature inside some of the tombs will even be hotter than it is outside. That is why it is a good idea to choose a cruise company that starts their visits in the early morning hours.
You can choose Nile River cruises that last three days, sail over four nights, or provide week-long tours. If you choose the shorter cruise trips, you normally will sail from Aswan to Luxor. Cruise-goers often get to see the Valley of the Kings, the Karnak Temples, and King Tutankhamun's tomb on this cruise trip. Some of the cruise lines journey to and from Cairo on 7-day and 9-day journeys.
When you opt for a cruise package, you will get a lot of amenities for one price. Your river cruise will include your cabin, port excursions, and related activities. You also receive onboard meals and complimentary beverages, including coffee, bottled water, soft drinks, beer, and wine. On some cruises, you can stay in hotels and participate in shipboard activities. Wi-Fi access is also available. Many Nile River cruises allow you to include your airfare into the cost of the package.
You can find several cruise lines that will take you on a Nile River Cruise. If you want to include Cairo (the Three Pyramids and the Sphinx), Aswan, and Luxor on your cruise holiday, a good choice is Peregrine Cruises.
Anticipate to pay $3,000 per person for this type of adventure if you choose a luxury trip. This price covers a cruise to and from Cairo, which last 9 days. The price drops to about $450 per person if you select a cruise line with more economical accommodations and last around 3 to 4 days.
