Lisbon has inspired explorers for centuries with its stunning setting at the Tagus River’s mouth. Its labyrinthine streets carry echoes of 16th-century navigators who sailed on the winds of the Age of Discovery. The city prospered greatly from its trade. And today’s streets are lined with the legacies of wealthy builders, including the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, stunning works that introduced Manueline architecture. Savoring local cuisine and port wine are favorite pastimes here. On any evening, the strains of fado spill from clubs in the historic Alfama District.

Porto holds a place of great traditional importance. The town lends its name to the port wine produced in the region and throughout the nation. Located along a rocky embankment, the city boasts picturesque neighborhoods, fashionable restaurants and lively markets. Like Lisbon, Porto has a rich past; its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow cobblestone streets brimming with romantic buildings spanning the centuries and a Romanesque cathedral. At the riverside, small barcos rabelos, boats once used to transport casks of wine, paint a charming scene.
Founded by a Celtic tribe before the rise of the Roman Empire, Salamanca was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 due to its beautifully preserved buildings. It is home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, founded in 1134, and its main square, bustling with students, is often called the most beautiful in Spain. The beauty of this richly historic city, besides the enormous Romanesque cathedral whose profile dominates the town, is the grace with which Salamanca retains a traditional Spanish village feel. It is a living museum that takes visitors back to the Middle Ages.

We were on the Viking Torgil. It was exceptional. The food was excellent and the ship/stateroom were immaculate. The staff, as always were extremely helpful. With Viking there is never a problem, as any issue that comes up is an opportunity for them to find a solution. This was our second tour with Viking. There will be more. We added on the extension in Lisbon. The hotel was great, as was the staff. Cannot recommend highly enough.
First Viking River cruise experience, and it was wonderful in all respects. Beyond service, itinerary, included tours, etc, I want to highlight the self-serve coffee machine on deck 2: it was the best ship coffee we've ever had on multiple cruises on multiple lines. The motorized blackout shade in our cabin was also terrific.
while viking wasn't my choice, they did an admirable job
Viking River Cruises is a high quality operation and the staff literally goes out of it's way to accommodate the passengers. What they advertise is what they deliver, and more! One of my fellow passengers had an honest mix up on the return air flight that they booked themselves. Guest services tried to rebook the same day, but there were no seats available until 24 hours later. Viking allowed them to remain on board for another day in an unoccupied cabin at no charge and they even booked the new air flights even though Viking did not originally do it. What service! On some excursions some passengers underestimated the difficulty of the walking and cobblestone streets. Viking tour guides remained with them very closely and assisted their excursion without jeopardizing the others. Very considerate!
Stefania provided clear and correct information about the trip. I felt I could trust her opinions when making choices about all the details for designing our vacation. Stephanie was always available for my questions throughout the entire trip process even the last minute ticketing questions. She provided kind advice on how to manage my family problem while away including if I had to come home immediately. She took the time to tell me there was a problem with my answering machine so all my phone calls to me while away were managed correctly especially given my family problem.
Excellent experience. Beautiful country and warm and friendly people.

Viking is a first class river cruise operator. They specialize in customer service and strive for satisfaction. The food and drink are over the top and always top quality. We were blown away when the cruise ended, a ship representative escorted us to the airport and remained with us until we entered airport security. We certainly will cruise again with Viking.
