River Cruise Itinerary

  1. Day 1
    St. Paul
    Sat, Sep 02, 2023
Arrive in St. Paul, then transfer to your ship.* After boarding, the afternoon is yours to relax or explore the city on your own. The "Twin Cities” boast distinctive neighborhoods; diverse ethnic, traditional and contemporary eateries; and an acclaimed arts scene-all served up with friendly Midwestern manners. (Dinner)

*Ground transfers are included with Viking Air purchase.
  2. Day 2
    Red Wing
    Sun, Sep 03, 2023
Enjoy the scenic landscape of this portion of the Mississippi as we sail to Red Wing, known for its American-made Red Wing Shoes, which produced footwear for soldiers in both world wars. The city was named after a celebrated Sioux chief whose red-dyed swan wing indicated his rank. The first settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, many from New England. They grew more wheat than any county in the nation. German, Irish and Scandinavian immigrants followed. Today, enjoy a city tour coupled with a visit to the National Eagle Center in nearby Wabasha, where you will learn all about eagle biology, ecology and natural history from one of the center's resident eagle ambassadors. Optional opportunities include a scenic cruise across Lake Pepin and the "Mighty Mississippi.” (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  3. Day 3
    La Crosse
    Mon, Sep 04, 2023
After breakfast on board, explore La Crosse and its numerous sites on the National Register of Historic Places, with a panoramic tour of the city. Its important architectural landmarks, along with the array of engaging statues lining the riverfront, make La Crosse feel like a vast open air museum. Or, consider an optional journey to Decorah, Iowa. Nestled among beautiful rolling hills unscathed by the leveling march of the glaciers, Decorah is a blend of small-town charm and urban convenience, and at its heart is Vesterheim, the national Norwegian American museum and heritage center, the largest museum in the United States dedicated to one single immigrant group. While in town, enjoy the friendliest shopping experience you have ever had in Decorah's many boutiques and have a delicious lunch in one of the several local restaurants. Decorah is also home to the "second-best brewery in the world”-Toppling Goliath. Sign on for a brewery tour and have an amazing craft-brewed pint with your lunch. Other recreational options abound: a tour of the world-renowned Seed Savers Exchange, or on-your-own trout fishing or cycling adventures on the city's justly famous biking trails. Tonight, dine on board as you continue sailing. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  4. Day 4
    Dubuque
    Tue, Sep 05, 2023
Arrive in Dubuque, where you will capture the flavor of life along the Mississippi during the great Steamboat Era. As you tour the city known as the "Masterpiece on the Mississippi,” see the Mathias Ham House, which was built by one of Dubuque's earliest entrepreneurs and exemplifies the opulent Victorian lifestyle of a booming river town before the Civil War. At Cable Car Square, a whimsical area with period-style lampposts in the historic downtown neighborhood, shops in old brownstones offer everything from jewelry to quilting supplies. Down at the river, the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is filled with five large tank displays, plus interactive exhibits and artifacts that tell the stories of the people who discovered, lived upon and celebrated the waterways of the United States. Or you may choose to shop on Galena's Main Street, lined with more than 100 interesting antique shops, pubs, wine bars and restaurants housed in historic redbrick and stone buildings that date to the mid-1800s. This Americana haven was recognized as one of America's greatest Main Streets by Travel + Leisure. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  5. Day 5
    Quad Cities
    Wed, Sep 06, 2023
Begin your day with a visit to the John Deere Pavilion-created as a celebration of the past, present and future of agribusiness-and the Deere family homes. Then, perhaps take an optional tour of a local family-owned and -operated farm to learn about modern-day farming techniques. You may choose to visit the Quad City Botanical Center to discover the delicious history of chocolate or stroll through the Figge Art Museum. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  6. Day 6
    Burlington
    Thu, Sep 07, 2023
Continue along the Mississippi this morning. Arrive in Burlington for a guided tour revealing small-town America in its historic downtown. Discover the Des Moines County Heritage Center, Garrett-Phelps House Museum, First Congregational Church, Capitol Theater and many more sites. Enjoy a breathtaking view of the Mississippi from Mosquito Park and take a stroll along Snake Alley, "the crookedest street in the world.” You will have the opportunity to embark on an optional excursion to Nauvoo and Fort Madison. Step back in time at Old Fort Madison and discover military life as it was lived on the rugged frontier of the Louisiana Territory. The fort is an amazingly accurate reconstruction of the first military fort on the Upper Mississippi. Enter the fascinating world of Historic Nauvoo, home of the Illinois Nauvoo Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since 1839. The restored homes, mercantile establishments and community buildings maintain the charm of what was once a beautiful, industrious city. Today, Nauvoo provides an opportunity to experience the people and times of the past. Back on board, unwind with an afternoon cookout. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  7. Day 7
    Hannibal
    Fri, Sep 08, 2023
This community is best known as the childhood home of author Mark Twain and the setting of his Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Enjoy the stories and sites of Twain's days in Hannibal as you hear about Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Becky Thatcher and Injun Joe. You may even see firsthand the fence of whitewashing fame. You will also visit the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum, with its extensive collection of Twain memorabilia. This walking portion of the tour includes seven museum properties-all located within a two-block area-including the Museum Gallery, where vivid depictions of the author's stories are displayed in 15 original Norman Rockwell paintings. Twain's colorful characters are brought to life during a trip through the Mark Twain Cave. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  8. Day 8
    St. Louis
    Sat, Sep 09, 2023
After breakfast, disembark and proceed to the airport for your return flight, or extend your journey with additional nights in St. Louis. (Breakfast)

    * Ground transfers are included with Viking Air purchase.

Health and Safety Protocols for Viking

Pre-Departure Test
To ensure your journey is smooth and that you are able to fully enjoy your voyage as planned, we highly recommend that all guests take a pre-departure COVID-19 test, no more than three days prior to beginning your journey.

Purified Air
Enjoy fresh air in your stateroom, knowing that all staterooms on Viking river ships feature independent air handling units that do not share air with other areas of the ship. Take comfort in knowing that the air in the public areas of your ship has also been purified with new short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C) lights and high-density filters, which kill 99.99% of all airborne viruses and bacteria.

Medical Services
While every precaution can reduce the risk of illness, we are also prepared for that outcome. Each of our vessels has always had a state-of-the-art Medical Center; those facilities have now been upgraded with more specialized equipment. We have also launched a new 24/7 hotline staffed by doctors, specifically for our river cruises.

Sanitization
Rest assured that the surfaces on your ship will be cleaned and sanitized continuously with daily scheduled deep cleanings. You will notice more hand sanitization stations throughout your ship. And on our ocean and expedition ships, we are using new sanitization robots that utilize UV-C light to treat surfaces in guest and crew public areas—an industry first.

Dining & Entertainment
On your ship, you can expect spacious, airy public areas and abundant options for al fresco dining. Also, on our ocean voyages, as always, you can enjoy complimentary 24-hour room service. Now, more options for spaced seating in all dining venues will allow for physical distancing; there will be additional table service at all bars and lounges; and new capabilities will allow you to watch more live events and enriching content through your in-room entertainment system.

Physical Distancing & Face Masks
Public health experts agree that proper physical distancing and the use of face masks are effective in helping slow the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses. Face masks are optional while moving about the ship. Please note: Viking’s Medical Team continually monitors conditions and may deem face masks to be necessary while moving about the ship, based on conditions at the time of travel. While ashore, guests will need to comply with any local guidelines for face masks and physical distancing. Face masks continue to be required for all crew.

Local Partner Training
As part of the Viking Health & Safety Program, we will regularly train every local partner, including motor coach drivers and tour guides. While ashore, Viking’s measures will meet or exceed local guidelines for social distancing and other precautions.

We had a wonderful trip. Our Viking River cruise was one of our best cruises ever. We did a pre-extension in Paris and a post-extension in Zurich. The pre and the post took the trip from "very good" to "best ever".

This was my 7th trip with Viking. They always go above and beyond

As always Viking went over and above expectations! Book it you won't regret it!

Viking is a first class river cruise operator. They specialize in customer service and strive for satisfaction. The food and drink are over the top and always top quality. We were blown away when the cruise ended, a ship representative escorted us to the airport and remained with us until we entered airport security. We certainly will cruise again with Viking.

Viking does a wonderful job. They really take good care of their guests!

Viking did an excellent job. The trip was great.

Viking River Cruises was first class all the way. The staff, food, accommodations, tours, etc. were all great.

Travel agent Soazeg Vadel very supportive.

Tour behind the previous Iron Curtain¦..something I never thought would be possible. Sobering historical tours. Beautiful landscape. Wonderful art

I was not made aware of the optional tours in Paris with the exception of the Montmartre tour.

We were on the Viking Torgil. It was exceptional. The food was excellent and the ship/stateroom were immaculate. The staff, as always were extremely helpful. With Viking there is never a problem, as any issue that comes up is an opportunity for them to find a solution. This was our second tour with Viking. There will be more. We added on the extension in Lisbon. The hotel was great, as was the staff. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Trip was wonderful. Food great, they catered to all my needs.

The South of France is beautiful at any time but with the lavender fields blooming, this time of the year is amazing.

The cabin was smaller than what we expected based on previous cruises with other operators. The staff was great. The included tours were average. We would have liked more walking tours but realize that would be difficult in large cities. We thought the Prague walking tour was poor. The Regent Hotel in Berlin was great. Nice room and convenient location. The Hilton in Prague was ok. The room setup was had little storage space, and the bathroom was small with no space around the sink for toiletries. The modern decor was aesthetically pleasing, but not very functional.
