River Cruise Itinerary

  1. Day 1
    New Orleans
    Sat, Jan 06, 2024
Arrive in New Orleans and embark your ship.* After check-in, the afternoon is yours to independently explore the city, where its French, African and other influences flavor not only its vibrant culture, but also its tantalizing Creole cuisine. The beloved birthplace of American jazz, historic New Orleans famously exudes a festive atmosphere along the balcony-lined Bourbon Street. Here, in the heart of the famed French Quarter, soulful rhythms lift the spirit, particularly during the city's world-renowned Mardi Gras. To see how its floats are made and learn the history of this famous yearly celebration, perhaps visit Mardi Gras World, just a short walk from your ship. On board, enjoy an informative lecture on the history and development of New Orleans while you take in a lively musical performance. (Dinner)

*Ground transfers are included with Viking Air purchase.
  2. Day 2
    New Orleans
    Sun, Jan 07, 2024
"The Big Easy” is one of America's most intriguing cities. A rich blend of Cajun, Creole and French cultures, New Orleans is home to fine cuisine, roaring jazz clubs, historic neighborhoods and the nonstop festive atmosphere of the legendary French Quarter. Disembark for a guided tour of New Orleans. From the Superdome and the French Quarter to the New Orleans Museum of Art and St. Charles Avenue, there is so much to experience. After lunch, you may choose to visit the world-class National WWII Museum; shop on Royal Street, home to art galleries and antique shops; or take a walking tour of the Garden District. Dinner is served on board, but you may experience a local restaurant or spend some time enjoying the music in the French Quarter. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  3. Day 3
    Darrow
    Mon, Jan 08, 2024
After breakfast, the day is yours to experience the Lower Mississippi-a region dotted with historic mansions, several of which are designated National Historic Landmarks for their architecture, their landscaping, and the contributions of the people who maintained the houses and the lands. Today, you may choose to explore one or several of the historic estates in the area. You may also journey to the famous Manchac Swamp, a wetlands area adorned with hundreds of acres of cypress trees and freshwater marshes. Complete your afternoon with a music presentation. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  4. Day 4
    St. Francisville
    Tue, Jan 09, 2024
We continue north on the Mississippi to St. Francisville. Boasting more than 140 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, St. Francisville is set along one of the most historic bluffs of the Mississippi. The town is said to be "two miles long and two yards wide” because it was originally built on a narrow ridge overlooking the river. Founded in 1809 to serve the commercial and cultural needs of surrounding landowners, it is the oldest town in Louisiana's Florida Parishes. Remarkably, many of St. Francisville's structures are not its own. Rather, they were moved upriver from Bayou Sara in the 1920s after the small settlement was destroyed by years of flooding. Today, we explore this area and visit the historic Rosedown Plantation and ornamental gardens. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  5. Day 5
    Natchez
    Wed, Jan 10, 2024
Natchez is the perfect location in which to enjoy small-town America. The town is distinguished by more than 500 historic buildings, including over 200 perfectly preserved homes that still grace its broad avenues. Throughout the day, you can explore shops in the historic district and other sites at your leisure. You may choose to visit one of many pre–Civil War mansions here, some of the most beautifully preserved in this area of the South. The city itself is home to more than 1,000 structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After dinner, learn about the life of local artisans and enjoy classical music. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  6. Day 6
    Vicksburg
    Thu, Jan 11, 2024
Arriving in Vicksburg, you immediately feel the Southern tradition that flows through the city's veins. It is rich in history-especially Civil War history. During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln called it "the key to the South.” And it indeed proved to be the site of the conflict's most pivotal battle, the Battle of Vicksburg, after which the Confederates surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. Visit Vicksburg National Military Park, which preserves the battlefield and commemorates the greater Vicksburg Campaign that preceded the battle. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  7. Day 7
    Baton Rouge
    Fri, Jan 12, 2024
Arrive in Baton Rouge, set on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River, and take a panoramic city tour of the area. Hear tales of the hardworking, fun-loving Cajun people and their contributions to Louisiana's history and culture. Your Viking Guest Services staff can help you plan the rest of your day with several optional excursions: a Cajun heritage tour; an exploration of the Atchafalaya Basin by boat or canoe; or a visit to the USS Kidd, the most historically accurate restoration of a World War II vessel in the United States. Tonight, enjoy music in the Explorers' Lounge. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  8. Day 8
    New Orleans
    Sat, Jan 13, 2024
After breakfast, disembark and proceed to the airport for your return flight, or extend your journey with additional nights in New Orleans.* (Breakfast)

    * Ground transfers are included with Viking Air purchase.

Health and Safety Protocols for Viking

Pre-Departure Test
To ensure your journey is smooth and that you are able to fully enjoy your voyage as planned, we highly recommend that all guests take a pre-departure COVID-19 test, no more than three days prior to beginning your journey.

Purified Air
Enjoy fresh air in your stateroom, knowing that all staterooms on Viking river ships feature independent air handling units that do not share air with other areas of the ship. Take comfort in knowing that the air in the public areas of your ship has also been purified with new short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C) lights and high-density filters, which kill 99.99% of all airborne viruses and bacteria.

Medical Services
While every precaution can reduce the risk of illness, we are also prepared for that outcome. Each of our vessels has always had a state-of-the-art Medical Center; those facilities have now been upgraded with more specialized equipment. We have also launched a new 24/7 hotline staffed by doctors, specifically for our river cruises.

Sanitization
Rest assured that the surfaces on your ship will be cleaned and sanitized continuously with daily scheduled deep cleanings. You will notice more hand sanitization stations throughout your ship. And on our ocean and expedition ships, we are using new sanitization robots that utilize UV-C light to treat surfaces in guest and crew public areas—an industry first.

Dining & Entertainment
On your ship, you can expect spacious, airy public areas and abundant options for al fresco dining. Also, on our ocean voyages, as always, you can enjoy complimentary 24-hour room service. Now, more options for spaced seating in all dining venues will allow for physical distancing; there will be additional table service at all bars and lounges; and new capabilities will allow you to watch more live events and enriching content through your in-room entertainment system.

Physical Distancing & Face Masks
Public health experts agree that proper physical distancing and the use of face masks are effective in helping slow the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses. Face masks are optional while moving about the ship. Please note: Viking’s Medical Team continually monitors conditions and may deem face masks to be necessary while moving about the ship, based on conditions at the time of travel. While ashore, guests will need to comply with any local guidelines for face masks and physical distancing. Face masks continue to be required for all crew.

Local Partner Training
As part of the Viking Health & Safety Program, we will regularly train every local partner, including motor coach drivers and tour guides. While ashore, Viking’s measures will meet or exceed local guidelines for social distancing and other precautions.

We had a wonderful trip. Our Viking River cruise was one of our best cruises ever. We did a pre-extension in Paris and a post-extension in Zurich. The pre and the post took the trip from "very good" to "best ever".

This was my 7th trip with Viking. They always go above and beyond

As always Viking went over and above expectations! Book it you won't regret it!

Viking is a first class river cruise operator. They specialize in customer service and strive for satisfaction. The food and drink are over the top and always top quality. We were blown away when the cruise ended, a ship representative escorted us to the airport and remained with us until we entered airport security. We certainly will cruise again with Viking.

Viking does a wonderful job. They really take good care of their guests!

Viking did an excellent job. The trip was great.

Viking River Cruises was first class all the way. The staff, food, accommodations, tours, etc. were all great.

Travel agent Soazeg Vadel very supportive.

Tour behind the previous Iron Curtain¦..something I never thought would be possible. Sobering historical tours. Beautiful landscape. Wonderful art

I was not made aware of the optional tours in Paris with the exception of the Montmartre tour.

We were on the Viking Torgil. It was exceptional. The food was excellent and the ship/stateroom were immaculate. The staff, as always were extremely helpful. With Viking there is never a problem, as any issue that comes up is an opportunity for them to find a solution. This was our second tour with Viking. There will be more. We added on the extension in Lisbon. The hotel was great, as was the staff. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Trip was wonderful. Food great, they catered to all my needs.

The South of France is beautiful at any time but with the lavender fields blooming, this time of the year is amazing.

The cabin was smaller than what we expected based on previous cruises with other operators. The staff was great. The included tours were average. We would have liked more walking tours but realize that would be difficult in large cities. We thought the Prague walking tour was poor. The Regent Hotel in Berlin was great. Nice room and convenient location. The Hilton in Prague was ok. The room setup was had little storage space, and the bathroom was small with no space around the sink for toiletries. The modern decor was aesthetically pleasing, but not very functional.
