Learn More About Value World River Cruises

Thanks to their smaller size and low draft, Value World river vessels can go where no other land transportation can take you. You can sail into the heartlands of various countries where some attractions can only be reached by water (Russia). You can choose to cruise and explore one country (China) or you can combine several in the span of a week (Europe). And if your heart desires true adventure, some Value World itineraries will let you explore less visited areas such as the Balkans or Serbia.

But no matter what destination or ship you choose, all of them will afford you a similar level of safety, comfort and convenience. In fact, you'll be waited on hand and foot by an incredibly attentive staff. Because Value World ships hold only 20 to 250 people, you'll never be "just a number" on board. It's likely the dining room’s maitre d' will greet you by name after the first night! Meals are classy affairs on board a Value World river cruise. Tables are set with crystal and china and you'll dine by candlelight in the evening.

Your stateroom is also attended to by helpful staff. While you're out sightseeing during the day, your room will be made up (with beds turned down and chocolate on your pillows in the evening). Typically on Value World river cruises you'll also enjoy daily morning coffee and afternoon tea; live music, folkloric performances or wine tastings many nights; professional English-speaking Cruise Directors and English-speaking local guides for all included sightseeing.

Affordable Tours has to be the best kept secret in the travel industry. I thought we were booking a group tour of 20-30 people. Turned out we were a group tour of two except on the Yangtze River cruise where we were grouped for shore excursions with a dozen or so Canadians who were also English speaking.

The hotels were all first class except in Xian, China where the heat had been turned off a couple of weeks earlier although everything else was first class. The local guides were excellent except for Shanghai where we had 3 different local guides for the 2 day stay.

Our first night in Beijing dinner was on our own. We went to a shopping mall about a block and a half from the Capital Hotel where there were at least a dozen noodle type shops, none with English. We pointed to a picture and had the best meal of the trip, sharing one order at about $2.50 USD for both and left food on the platter. Have no idea what we ate that night but it was delicious.

This tour was about half the cost of other Yangtze river cruises that I considered and covered more attractions and adventures such as the lunch at a home in the Hutong in Beijing followed by the rickshaw ride and the pandas at the zoo in Chongquin. Due to maintenance on the locks we did not get to travel through the locks at the 3 Gorges Dam but it had been recently opened for cargo ships so we got to view the operation of the locks from the 3 Gorges. Probably a better experience than traveling through the locks in our ship at night.

Would highly recomend this tour to anyone. We travelled late March-early Apirl. Weather was comfortable and pleasant in Beijing and even got to view parts of the Gobi Desert due to a sand storm besieging the city. Weather very warm and pleasant on the Yangtze river cruise. Rain and cooler temps in Xian and Shanghai but not nearly as bad as the tornados, torrential rainstorms and hailstorms I have experienced in past few weeks since returning to TX.

I only have one complaint and that is about the information that Value World Tours sent us in the "Tips on Travel" about Gratuities. In red they said that all gratuities were already paid and then went on to give suggested gratuities for various individuals. The wording was not only very confusing, but also does a great disservice to the wonderful service folks, guides and ships crew. I have never been treated as well as I was during this trip but one person on the tour felt he didn't need to tip at all since they had said that "tips to guides, drivers, porters and the ship's crew are prepaid." I would suggest re-wording that to say "BASIC tips to....are prepaid..." and take out the red coloring. I would also include suggested amounts for the tourist police who guarded us as well as for the "handler" who met us at the airport etc. and made sure our transport to and from various places was so seamless. Clearly all the service personnel are paid very little in salaries yet gave us such wonderful service and they deserve better than for the travelers to think that we don't have to tip.

My husband and I would say that this tour exceeded our expectations! The descriptions on paper were interesting but seeing and feeling them is a different story. The itinerary is exceptional with a lot of variety. We were so impressed with the staff on the boat overall. Our only real complaint was with the food on the boat. It seemed that the chef used the cheapest cuts of meat and served it over steamed rice for both lunch and dinner almost every day we were on the ship. For people who have the means to go on a trip like this, it is not acceptable. Fortunately, the excursions made up for this. The people were friendly at almost every stop and at no time did we feel unsafe, something that several people have asked upon our return. We really enjoyed this intimate tour with only 25 people. It was so much better than a cruise with 3000 of your not so close friends! I would highly recommend this "soft adventure".

Some minor variations in the land based itinerary, but overall, the trip was as described. The only anxious moment we had was when we arrived at the vessel ( we did not book air travel with them) there was no one visible on the boat and we had no idea how to get on board. When we did figure out how to get on board, we had no idea how we were to check in - there was no one around. Eventually we did get it sorted out.
