Itinerary

Tour Itinerary

Italy is a country with so much to offer—amazing scenery, ancient ruins, a rich history, sumptuous cuisine, architectural treasures, splendid art, designer shops, and friendly people. On this Best of Italy & Sicily tour, you'll experience some of Italy's and Sicily's most popular cities and historic sights, including Rome, Florence, Venice, Assisi, Pompeii, Sorrento coast, and Taormina. You'll also enjoy an overnight ferry cruise from Naples to Sicily. Tour highlights include Agrigento, where you'll see ancient Greek structures that have survived for 2,400 years! And in Taormina, you'll visit the 3rd-century BC Greek Theater, the second largest of its kind in Sicily. Photos and words cannot adequately capture these sights—you must visit them in person! Your time on Sorrento coast includes a visit to the Isle of Capri with a jetfoil ride across the Bay of Naples and a funicular ride to Capri village. If art is your focus, you'll be delighted by Michelangelo's David in Florence and his ceiling paintings in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, which you'll also see on this tour. Watch glassblowers in action as they create their beautiful art in Venice. Or if historical churches interest you, you're sure to be delighted by the 12th-century Norman Cathedral in Monreale, famous for its 50,000 square feet of precious byzantine mosaics; St. Peter's Basilica in Rome; the 13th-century Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, where St. Francis is buried; Ravenna's 6th-century Basilica of St. Apollinaris in Classe, famous for its mosaics; and more. These are just a few of the many highlights on this Best of Italy & Sicily tour. So if you want to see Italy, let Globus handle the details—including special experiences such as wine tasting in Marsala and a private water-taxi ride in Venice—and focus your energy on experiencing this marvelous country.

Day 1: Arrive in Rome, Italy.
Welcome to Rome! At 5 pm, meet your Tour Director and traveling companions, and leave the hotel for a special welcome dinner with wine at one of Rome's lively restaurants. (D)

Day 2: Rome.
Globus' unique guided sightseeing includes inside visits to the VATICAN MUSEUMS and SISTINE CHAPEL with Michelangelo's ceiling paintings and The Last Judgment, and monumental ST. PETER'S SQUARE and BASILICA to admire Michelangelo's Pietà. Then, drive to the Roman Forum and visit the amazing COLOSSEUM, where gladiators once fought. An optional walking tour with a Local Guide is available to further explore famous sites for those who wish to see it all. (B)

Day 3: Rome-Pisa-Florence.
Enter Tuscany and arrive in Pisa to marvel at the legendary Leaning Tower. Take your pictures pushing back the tower before continuing to Florence, the "Cradle of the Renaissance." This evening, you may wish to try out Tuscan specialties. (B)

Day 4: Florence-Venice Island.
This morning, focus on Florence. A highlight is a visit to the ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS to admire Michelangelo's David. Your walking tour with a Local Guide features the magnificent cathedral, Giotto's Bell Tower, the Baptistry's heavy bronze "Gate of Paradise," and sculpture-studded SIGNORIA SQUARE. Time to shop for Florentine leather goods and gold jewelry sold by the ounce, for which the city is famous. Cross the wooded Apennine Mountains and arrive in Venice. Enter in style by PRIVATE BOAT and arrive on the island of Murano. This evening, enjoy [LF] a ride by PRIVATE WATER-TAXI to ST. MARK'S SQUARE to discover Venice by night. Exciting optional excursions are available: dinner in one of Venice's excellent restaurants and a gondola ride through its canals. (B)

Day 5: Venice Island.
This morning, watch a skilled GLASSBLOWER fashion delicate objects in an age-old traditional manner, before boarding your PRIVATE BOAT to ST. MARK'S SQUARE. Meet your Local Guide for a walking tour including visits to the byzantine ST. MARK'S BASILICA, lavish DOGES' PALACE and the BRIDGE OF SIGHS. Then, enjoy Venice at your own pace or join an exciting optional lagoon cruise to the colorful island of Burano. (B)

Day 6: Venice Island-Ravenna-Assisi.
Follow the Adriatic coastline to Ravenna. Here, see the famous mosaics in the 6th-century BASILICA OF ST. APOLLINARIS IN CLASSE. In the afternoon, arrive in peaceful Assisi and visit the massive 13th-century lower BASILICA OF ST. FRANCIS built above the Saint's grave. (B,D)

Day 7: Assisi-Pompeii-Naples. Overnight Cruise To Palermo.
Arrive in POMPEII, the Roman city both destroyed and preserved by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. A guided walking tour through the excavations features patrician houses, public baths, and commercial districts that strikingly recall day-to-day life when Rome was at the apex of her power. In nearby Naples, [LF] a cappuccino and sfogliatella await you at the famous Gran Caffè Gambrinus before boarding your FERRY in Naples for the overnight cruise to Sicily. (B)

Day 8: Palermo.
After disembarkation, start your sightseeing with a Local Guide. Visit the ornate Piazza Bellini, Capo Market, the baroque Church of Immacolata, and the CATHEDRAL. Drive up to Monreale for a panoramic view of the Conca d'Oro and a visit to the 12th-century NORMAN CATHEDRAL, famous for its 50,000 square feet of precious byzantine mosaics. (B)

Day 9: Palermo-Marsala-Agrigento.
In Marsala, visit a SALT MILL, then a true highlight: a [LF] WINE TASTING at the famous Florio wine cellar to sample and learn about Marsala wines. Next, drive along the western coast to Agrigento. Here, your Local Guide will take you for a spectacular walk through the magnificent VALLEY OF TEMPLES. Even travelers who have visited Athens and Delphi are awed by the gigantic yet graceful Greek structures that miraculously survived 24 centuries of tormented history. (B,D)

Day 10: Agrigento-Taormina Riviera.
This morning, enjoy the scenic beauty and treasures of the island's heart on your way to Taormina, where you will visit the ancient GREEK THEATER dating back to the 3rd century BC and the second-largest of its kind in Sicily. The Italy/Sicily Globus tour was excellent! We enjoyed every minute. It was very fast paced, and crowded in Italy, most likely due to the terrorism threats in France. We felt very safe in Italy with the high presence of police and military everywhere we travelled. We would have preferred a better class of dining experience. The meals were fine, but not the best tables (back rooms that were overly crowded and difficult to carry on conversations with new friends) instead of the terrace tables or tables with a view of the sea. The pace of the meals seemed way too rapid. We would have preferred a great location and a 2-3 hr meal. To get the better tables, we were able to request them ourselves and enjoy a leisurely paced european style meal at most lunches, but not the dinners and/or optional meals we purchases thru Globus. A Shame! Some of the hotels didn't seem 'first class' to us, while others were a pleasure to enjoy.

By Barbara J on Sep 06, 2015

Our hotel rooms were very beautiful. The meals were wonderful and in very nice restaurants. Our last day of touring was canceled because of a large fire on the road to our destination. That was a disappointment. However that is not your fault or the fault of Globus. There was no other alternate route. The weather was hotter and there was more walking than we expected. However that helped us keep our weight down after such great meals.

By Phyllis G on Apr 05, 2015

Only 2 hotels were what I consider a little less than the rest (Assisi being one but can't remember the other hotel). All other hotels exceeded my expectations and I would classify them as 4 star. Other two hotels were very old and not as modern but they were very clean and comfortable.

I would like to say that I had the trip of a lifetime! I waited 18 years to get to go on this trip, and I did a lot of research to find just the right tour. Affordable Tours included both ALL of Italy AND Sicily, which is exactly what I wanted to do (my dad Napolitano and my mom Siciliana). I am retired, but have been a professional photographer, and the pics I got have received rave reviews, which really made me extremely happy. My photo album on Snapfish will be incredible! I have told many people after I returned that if I were to die this day, my life has been complete!!! And, since it was my birthday the day we toured Rome, thank you, Affordable Tours, for the BEST birthday of my life! (Plus, our local guide on that day - Simone - was fabulous and very learned, AND SIMPLY GORGEOUS!) He announced it was my birthday to the entire crowd at the Colisseum! What a day! What a trip! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

By Kathryn W on Sep 29, 2013

We had a fabulous tour director. She was organized and efficient. She was friendly and treated everyone kindly. She went out -of her way to assure we all had the best of experiences. She was very knowledgeable and was a joy to learn from about each city we visited. The tour director far surpassed my expectations. She is a gem, and the absolute best tour guide i have ever had. I would love to take another trip with her as our guide. Globus is blessed to have such a wonderful guide. The driver was an excellent driver. He didn't talk to us, but he always smiled. He also was efficient to always have our luggage to our rooms quickly. They worked so well together and laughed often which was also a plus to the trip.
